Welcome to Term 3!
Term 3 is shaping up to be an exciting and action-packed term for Year 5! We have some fantastic learning experiences ahead, with powerful owls, biomimicry, 3D design, and camp all featuring throughout the term.
As our students continue to grow in independence, this term will also provide plenty of opportunities to think creatively, solve problems and apply their learning in new ways. Here is a quick look at what is coming up!
What Are We Learning?
English – Informative Writing
Students will explore the features of informative texts and use their growing knowledge of powerful owls to create their own National Geographic Kids-inspired article. They will learn how to research, take effective notes, organise information and present scientific ideas in an engaging way.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will explore algorithms, area and perimeter, time, angles, and location and transformation. Through explicit teaching and problem-solving activities, students will develop their understanding of these concepts and apply their mathematical skills in a range of practical contexts.
Science – Adaptations
Our Powerful Science journey continues as students investigate how structural and behavioural adaptations help living things survive. The powerful owl will be a major focus as students examine the incredible features that make it such an effective nocturnal predator.
HASS – Needs, Wants and Economics
Students will explore the difference between needs and wants and investigate how people make choices when resources are limited. They will begin developing an understanding of consumers, businesses and financial decision-making.
Technology – 3D Design
Students will continue building their digital technology skills through 3D design. Using Tinkercad, they will learn how digital tools can be used to create, test and improve their ideas.
New student
We are also excited to welcome Jacob Lidster to 5VIC and the TMC community. We hope they quickly feel at home and enjoy being part of our Year 5 cohort.
Formal Uniform Days
A reminder that students are required to wear their formal uniform on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please help students ensure they arrive at school in the correct uniform and with all required uniform items.
Year 5 Camp – Week 6
One of the biggest highlights of Year 5 is almost here! Our Year 5 Camp will take place in Week 6. A separate camp newsletter will be made with all specific information, including what to bring, important dates and other camp details.
For now, the countdown is officially on!
Our Second and Final Homework Project
Term 3 will also see students begin their second and final Year 5 homework project.
This time, students will become biomimicry designers! Inspired by the adaptations of the powerful owl, students will identify a feature of the owl and use it as inspiration to design a functional product or solution for humans.
Students will develop their idea before using Tinkercad to create a 3D digital design.
More information, including the task requirements and timeline, will be provided soon. We are very excited to see the creative ideas our Year 5 students develop!
Tutoring
Year 5 tutoring will continue in Term 3 and will run every Tuesday after school until 3:30 pm. There will be no tutoring in Week 6, due to camp the following day, or in Weeks 9 and 10 during our assessment period.
Students currently attending tutoring can continue as usual. If we feel that other students may benefit from some additional support, a separate invitation will be sent directly to their parents.
Parents are asked to be ready to collect their child from the school car park at 3:30 pm.

An Exciting Term Ahead
There is certainly plenty to look forward to in Term 3. We are excited to welcome the students back and cannot wait to see them continue to grow as learners, designers, scientists and problem-solvers.
