Last week, our Year 7 students headed off to Kindilan Bush Camp for an exciting few days of challenge, teamwork and fun. Students enthusiastically took part in a wide range of activities, including sensory trails, climbing, canoeing, archery, raft building, and the ever-popular flying fox.

Throughout the camp, students demonstrated resilience, courage and cooperation as they stepped outside their comfort zones and supported one another. Team-building activities helped strengthen friendships and encouraged students to develop important communication and problem-solving skills.

The camp was a memorable experience for all involved, leaving students with a strong sense of achievement, new friendships and plenty of stories to share back at school.

Here at our beautiful college in Mount Tamborine on the Gold Coast, our Year 2 learners have been diving into the exciting world of sound — and what a joyful journey it has been!

Over the past few weeks, students have been investigating how sound is made, how it travels, and how vibrations play a key role in everything we hear. Through hands-on experiments, collaborative discussions and plenty of curious questioning, our classroom has been buzzing with discovery.

Seeing Sound in Action

One of our favourite experiments involved placing rice on top of a speaker. When music played, the rice began to “dance”! This helped us see that sound is created by vibrations — even though we can’t always see them with our eyes. Watching the tiny grains jump and move made this invisible concept visible and memorable for everyone.

Exploring Pitch and Volume

Last week, we experimented with rulers placed over the edge of our desks. By flicking the ruler and adjusting how much of it extended over the edge, students explored pitch (how high or low a sound is) and volume (how loud or soft it is). We discovered that shorter vibrations created higher sounds, while longer sections produced lower sounds. There were plenty of surprised faces as learners noticed how small changes made big differences in sound!

Creating a “Chicken in a Cup”

This week’s experiment certainly brought smiles and laughter! Using a cup, string and a damp sponge, students created what many call a “chicken in a cup.” As they pulled down on the string with the damp sponge, tiny vibrations travelled up the string. On their own, these vibrations were too faint to hear clearly. However, when the string was attached to the cup, the sound became much louder.

We learned that the cup acts as a sounding board, amplifying the vibrations so our ears can hear them. This experiment beautifully demonstrated that sound needs vibrations — and sometimes a little help — to travel effectively.

Our Year 2 students have shown wonderful curiosity, teamwork and enthusiasm throughout these investigations. It has been a pleasure to watch them question, predict, test and reflect as young scientists.

We look forward to continuing our exploration of science in ways that engage every learner and celebrate diverse ways of thinking and discovering.

We are thrilled to share that our 2026 primary school musical will be Madagascar – A Musical Adventure KIDS! The much anticipated news was met with great excitement, and there was certainly a buzz around the school as students discovered what production we will be bringing to the stage.

We would like to invite all students in Years 3 to 6 who are interested in being part of this fantastic show to attend an expression of interest session this coming Tuesday 3rd March at lunchtime. Students can head straight to the hall after the eating bell at 11:30am.

This session is simply an opportunity to find out more and register interest. Further details about auditions and rehearsals will be shared soon.

We cannot wait to see our talented students shine on stage!

As part of our All About Me unit in Term One, our class has been learning about caring for our environment and Caring for Country. We have been exploring what it means to respect, protect and nurture the world around us, and how even small actions can make a big difference.

We began by rolling up our sleeves and cleaning up our gardening space. The children worked together to pick up rubbish, clear garden beds and prepare the area for some exciting new additions: our worm farm, vegetable garden and compost system. It was wonderful to see everyone taking responsibility and showing pride in improving our shared space.

One of the highlights of our week has quickly become Worm Wednesday! The children have loved learning about our worm farm and collecting food scraps to feed our worms. They are developing a deeper understanding of how food waste can be reused in sustainable ways to help our garden grow. Watching the worms at work has been both fascinating and educational.

We have been incredibly lucky to have families supporting our efforts by bringing in food scraps from home to help feed our worms and contribute to our compost. This connection between home and school is so valuable for our learners, and we truly value these relationships. When children see sustainability being practised both at school and at home, the learning becomes even more meaningful.

We are excited to see what we can grow throughout the year and look forward to sharing our garden’s progress with our wider community. If there are any families who are experienced in growing their own food, we would love your input and support to help make our garden a great success.

Together, we are learning that caring for Country starts with caring for our own little patch and every small action helps our environment thrive.
