Parent Webinar - My Teen & The Filtered Life
Upcoming Parent Webinar - My Teen & the Filtered Life
Understanding and Navigating Social Media, Self Worth & Identity
Is your teen glued to their phone? Ever wondered why they care so much about filters, followers, or how many likes they get?
This week’s parent webinar explores the complex digital lives of adolescents, where social media isn’t just entertainment - it’s a major force shaping identity, self-esteem, and peer connection. From group chats and selfies to sleep loss and comparison spirals, we’ll unpack what’s really happening behind the screen.
Presented by Year 9 & 10 Coordinator Aaron McClane, My Teen & the Filtered Life offers insight into how the teenage brain responds to social media and why even “trivial” online interactions can carry deep emotional weight. You’ll learn how digital platforms are wired to meet teens’ needs for approval and identity - but often at the cost of wellbeing.
This session will give you practical strategies for:
- Opening healthy conversations about your teen’s online life
- Supporting body image and self-worth in the digital age
- Creating shared, realistic boundaries around phone use
- Modelling balanced screen habits in the home
Whether your child is posting, scrolling, or struggling, this webinar will help you support them without judgment and stay connected through a world that can often feel filtered and fragile.
Join us Thursday 31 July at 7:30pm via Zoom for this essential session:

Each week, our My Teen webinar series highlights a different challenge of adolescence, from friendship breakdowns to school stress - with expert guidance from our College leaders.
Together, we’re working to strengthen the partnership between home and school, one developmental milestone at a time.

Year 9 Science
On Thursday our Year 9 VAL class did a lesson on light reflection and refraction as part of a larger physics unit in science. In this lesson the students were challenged to create a piece of art using a digital light refraction simulation. This was a great opportunity to combine art with science and reflects the creative minds of our Year 9 students. It was great to see their enthusiasm with this task. There were many great submissions for this challenge, some of the talented work can be seen below.

Unreturned Home Readers
Home readers are a vital part of learning to read. These short, levelled books support reading fluency, confidence, and daily home practice – particularly in the early years. To ensure all students can access the books they need, it’s essential that our home reader library remains complete and well-maintained.
Unfortunately, a growing number of readers are not being returned, making it difficult for us to provide the right books to the right students at the right time. To help address this, we are introducing a new process for managing overdue home readers.
Starting next week, families whose children have readers more than 28 days will receive a reminder email. They will then have 7 days to return the missing book(s) before a $10 per book replacement fee is added to their account. This amount reflects the cost of purchasing a new copy so the reader remains available for others.
We understand that books can occasionally be misplaced, and we hope this system will simply serve as a timely prompt to track down overdue items and return them to school.
Thank you for your support in helping us maintain this valuable shared resource for all students.
Jump Rope for Heart is here – let’s get skipping!
We’re kicking off our Jump Rope for Heart journey this week and aiming to skip our way to a massive 20 hours of skipping – and we need your help to reach our goal!
Get started by visiting jumprope.org.au/parents to register your child and set up their very own fundraising page. You’ll unlock awesome skipping trick videos, be able to share your child’s progress with family and friends, and raise funds online the easy way!
Let’s jump in and make a difference – one skip at a time!

Primary Ice Cream Day - next Thursday, July 31
The Primary SRC is running a special ice cream fundraiser next Thursday to assist our Primary Musical performance with their purchase of costumes. We are hoping to raise $1,000 for this important event.
Children can bring in $5 anytime between now and the event and hand it to their teacher. On Thursday they will get an ice cream and toppings of their choice! It promises to be a fun event for everyone involved.
We will also have lactose free, gluten intolerant and dairy free options available.
If possible, please bring in the $5 payment by Tuesday next week and then Mr Stevens will have a good indication of how much ice cream to buy before the event on Thursday!
Celebrating Our Sporting Stars
At Tamborine Mountain College, we believe sport is about much more than competition, it’s a chance for students to grow, challenge themselves, and learn the values that will shape them for life.
Our KIES values, Kindness, Integrity, Equity, and Success, are at the heart of everything we do, and this extends to our physical education program. We’re committed to building a strong sporting culture across both Primary and Secondary, with a focus on resilience, teamwork, effort, confidence, and leadership.
To celebrate and encourage student participation in sport, we’re excited to launch weekly PE awards for our Prep to Year 6 students. Two students will be recognised each week at the Prep–Year 2 assembly, with another two at the Year 3–6 assembly. This new initiative, led by our Primary Sports Coordinator, Mr David Evans, is all about acknowledging the diverse contributions our students make during PE lessons, in sporting competitions, and through their personal growth in sport.
This week's amazing awards went to:
Winter (Year 1)
Wally (Year 2)
Harry (Year 4)
Audrey-May (Year 6)
Well done we are so proud of you!
By weaving our KIES values into every part of our PE program, we aim to foster a lifelong love of sport while supporting the holistic development of our students. We look forward to celebrating the efforts and achievements of our young athletes as they continue to grow, both on and off the field.

Pre Prep: Strengthening Social Skills Through Imaginative Play
In Pre Prep, our focus this term has been on strengthening social skills and encouraging imaginative play — two essential elements that align beautifully with the Connectedness and Active Learning outcomes of the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG).
It has been a joy to see children deeply engaged in meaningful play across our learning environments. In the home corner, children have collaborated through role-play, negotiating characters and working together to create playful, real-world scenarios. Over in the small world area, creativity has taken flight with the building of magical fairy houses — ideas flowing freely as imaginations sparked and merged.
Outdoors, the energy and collaboration have continued in our new construction space. Children have been exploring tools and materials to bring their building ideas to life. A recent addition of stones to the mud pit has transformed it into a mini gravel yard, where trucks and diggers transport loads and deliver materials. The children have loved using the large scales to weigh the gravel — making sure they have the just right amount for each load.
These rich learning experiences have not only supported creative expression and problem-solving but also strengthened communication, teamwork, and a sense of belonging in our Pre Prep community.
