Tamborine Mountain College Students Lead Powerful Owl Research Project
Tamborine Mountain College (TMC) students are taking their learning beyond the classroom and into the forest, as part of an innovative research initiative focused on one of Australia’s most iconic nocturnal birds - the Powerful Owl.
Working in partnership with BirdLife Australia, and proudly supported by the Queensland Government—Engaging Science Grants, TMC’s Year 5 students are contributing to real-world research through the nationally recognised Powerful Owl Project. The program combines hands on science, environmental stewardship and community engagement, positioning students as active contributors to local conservation efforts.
Head of Primary, Mark Stevens, said the project reflects the College’s commitment to meaningful, applied learning. “This is science in its most authentic form,” Mr Stevens said. “Our students are learning about our local ecosystems, while contributing data and developing a genuine understanding of their role in protecting our local environment.”
As part of the program, students engage in a range of scientific activities, including analysing owl pellets to identify prey species, studying habitat requirements, and deploying acoustic monitoring devices known as Audiomoths to detect owl activity in the local area. These devices allow students to collect real data, which can be shared with conservation researchers.
The project also extends into the local community. Nesting and prey boxes are being installed on the College grounds and on nearby properties, creating habitats to encourage the growth of wildlife.
Towards the end of the year, the students will present their learnings at a special showcase event, inviting families and community members to experience the project firsthand. The event will feature student-led displays, live demonstrations and interactive learning opportunities, with the aim of raising awareness about local biodiversity and conservation.
Tamborine Mountain’s unique natural environment provides an ideal setting for the initiative, and the College hopes the project will continue to grow in partnership with the local community. “Our goal is to create something that extends beyond the school gates,” Mr Stevens said. “We want this to be a project that our students feel proud of, and one that contributes positively to the preservation of our local environment for years to come.”
The Powerful Owl Project is part of TMC’s broader sustainability focus, which aims to embed environmental responsibility into both the curriculum and the culture of the school.
