HUGE Sucess at the Tournament of the Minds
On Sunday, TMC had two amazing teams compete in Tournament of Minds. The Gold Coast regionals were held at The Southport School (TSS) which was also an amazing place to watch the Pacific Air Show from.
TMC Team 1 was made up of Year 6 students: Scarlett A, Eden W and Josephine S; and Year 5 students: Liam C S, Finn W, Mila D and Ella H. They delivered a very entertaining presentation in the Language Literature division, based on The Lorax and Uno's Garden.
TMC Team 2 was made up of Year 7 students: Nate M and Felix H; and Year 8 students: Isobel S, Skye P, Jasmine d, Lauren E and Poppy W. They delivered an outstanding presentation in the Social Sciences division.
Our wonderful teams were supported and cheered on by their families, Mr Haskins, Mrs Stevens and Mrs Sands.
The results have just come through.... First Place for both teams!!!!
Our two teams will now compete at the State Finals!! Amazing work TMC!

Book Week
Book Week took over TMC this week with a celebration of literacy. Our Book Fair was a huge success - thank you for the parent volunteers for helping to run the fair. It was great seeing the excitment of reading on our students' faces as they came to the soon-to-open Little Book Room to buy some books! Classes participated in literacy activities in classrooms this week, and we ended today with a fun Book Week costume day. Thank you everyone for participating!

Year 9 Business and Economics
The ASX Sharemarket Game 2024 is open and Year 9 Business and Economics are thoroughly enjoying being involved!
The game issues students with $50,000 virtual dollars and uses real life data from the Australian Stock Exchange for students to invest in companies of their choice. Students are required to research the companies and give reasons why they have chosen to invest in the companies. They are also required to diversify their investments in order to meet game requirements.
The Australia-wide Schools ASX Game is designed to meet the requirements of the curriculum by helping students understand how the stock market works and understand the risk versus reward involved in investing.
Students will finish the game in week 5 next term and until then will continue to buy and sell shares to see who ends up with the most money at the end!

Year 9 Science - An Eye for Discovery
Recently in Year 9 Science, students have been getting hands-on to learn about light transmission, reflection and refraction of light in their Physics unit of study. Somewhere between feelings of disgust and gasps of amazement, students explored the structure of a bovine eyeball to better understand Snell’s Law of refraction, including extracting the lens to observe whether it was convex or concave. The students had an amazing time getting to experience the concepts of Physics in such a real-life context.
Innovative Minds Set Sail at the Interschool STEM Competition!
This year’s highly anticipated Interschool STEM Competition saw a wave of excitement and creativity as students from across the Gold Coast gathered to showcase their engineering prowess in a thrilling challenge: designing and building remote-controlled boats. The event, held on 21st August, was a resounding success, with students demonstrating remarkable ingenuity and teamwork.
The competition tasked participants with designing and constructing remote-controlled boats that were lightweight, waterproof and fast. Students were given a set of materials and constraints, pushing them to apply their knowledge of physics, engineering, and technology to create functional and competitive vessels.
There were two categories that TMC entered, Main Entry and the Wild Card category. Our Main Entry Boat (designed and built by Kaiden B, Josh F-B, Archie F and Ewen T) floated beautifully, but it just could not compete with the speed boats from other schools. Our students should be commended for their teamwork and positive attitudes.
TMC entered four boats into the Wild Card category. Unfortunately due to electrical and 3D printing issues, Chloe C and Hayden L had to forfeit at the last minute. They maintained high spirits as they cheered on the other teams and were ready to jump in and lend a hand where needed.
It was then onto the other three TMC boats to compete. Whilst Archie A's boat showed excellent creativity with its design, it was not powerful enough to come out in front. Felix H and Nate M's paddle style boat looked like it was going to win the gold, however Cooper M's batman/fish inspired boat took over the lead and won. Well done Cooper!
The day ended with a sing-a-long in the bus ride back to school, showing that the students had a wonderful day out.
Congratulations to all participants for making this year’s Interschool STEM Competition a success!
Year 7 Science Excursion
In preparation for their forthcoming Biology exam, on Monday our Year 7 scientists went to Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area to investigate living organisms in their environments, with a particular focus on koala conservation.
Our first stop was at the Mangrove Boardwalk towards the Bird Hide overlooking Coombabah Lake. The students used dichotomous keys to identify different species of mangrove trees before sighting and identifying at least 10 living organisms, and discussing their relevant trophic levels within an energy pyramid.
Our second stop was along the Koala Track where we identified the strengths and weaknesses of Coombabah Lakelands in regards to koala conservation. Coombabah Lakelands is home to over 200 koalas and we were fortunate enough to see a mummy koala in the tree canopy with a joey in her pouch. We showed the students how to report koala sightings on their phones and why this is an important method of the general public in helping maintain healthy koala populations.

Year 4 Landscape Art Shines with Smudging Techniques
The students in our Year 4 classes have been hard at work exploring different artistic techniques, and their latest project focused on creating unique interpretations of landscapes using the smudging method.
The results were truly impressive, with each student developing their own creative vision for their landscape scene.
We're thrilled to announce that several of the Year 4 students' landscape artworks will be featured at our upcoming Arts Festival. This is a wonderful opportunity for the young artists to showcase their talents to the broader school community.
We encourage everyone to attend the festival and marvel at the creativity and skill on display. You're sure to be inspired by the imaginative landscapes brought to life through the clever use of smudging techniques.
Congratulations to our talented Year 4 class - your landscapes are truly stunning!
