It’s always wonderful to see our TMC community celebrated, and we were delighted to see Tamborine Mountain College featured in the Spring Edition of Kids on the Gold Coast.

For those of us who call Tamborine Mountain home, we know there is something pretty special about growing up and learning in this beautiful part of the world. Our College is fortunate to be surrounded by a community that values connection, belonging and looking out for one another.

At TMC, our vision is simple: Empowering Every Student.

We believe every child begins at the top of the mountain, but from there, their journey is theirs to discover. Our role is to give them the confidence, opportunities and experiences to explore their potential and find their own path.

And the view could be extraordinary.

The bright stage lights of HOTA shone down onto our school’s talented Drama Excellence students as they took to the stage. On the 7th of August, the young performers were invited to join The Scene Project, an inspiring event for our emerging actors. Upon arrival, they were given the unique opportunity to demonstrate their flourishing skills, performing a unique
adaptation of the commissioned play, ICARUS. After which, they participated in a learning forum with other schools, fostering collaborations and forging new social connections. The day closed with a spectacular performance from Queensland Theatre Company, serving as a memorable source of inspiration for years to come.

Beyond a standard elective, Drama Ex is an intensive program that encourages students to develop refined acting skills and prepare them for future careers in the industry. Prior to the event, rehearsal sessions were buzzing with quiet anticipation as students mastered cues and refined character movements for the world-class Gold Coast stage. When the day rolled along, the students set off with infectious enthusiasm and continued to maintain the energy throughout the day.

This year’s commissioned script by Queensland Theatre Company, ICARUS, is a contemporary post-dramatic reimagining of the classic Greek myth. The play challenges audiences to navigate a complex maze of modern perspectives, using the ancient story of flight and fall to explore contemporary ideas surrounding youth culture, ambition, and the digital age.

Students now reflect on the event with nostalgic exhilaration. As drama excellence student, Grace M exclaimed, “Taking our work into the public spotlight is a massive milestone for me and the rest of the Drama Excellence Students!” Furthermore, drama student James H remarked, “It was great. Everyone was really inclusive and encouraging… we all had a good time and everyone did their best.” It is little wonder that the group had such a good time given the substantial efforts of Ms Carlyon to make the day happen. A big shout out to all who organised and participated in the event!

Tamborine Mountain College is proud to be one of only five schools invited to exhibit student artwork at this year’s SWELL Sculpture Festival.

Under the guidance of Art teacher Mrs Jackie Olivier, our talented Arts students worked collaboratively to create Hinterland to the Horizon, a striking sculpture inspired by the connection between our mountain community and the Gold Coast landscape. The project provided students with a valuable opportunity to develop their artistic ideas, contribute to a large-scale collaborative work and experience the process of preparing an artwork for public exhibition.

The sculpture is now on display alongside more than 80 large-scale contemporary works at the festival, which stretches from Currumbin Beach to Flat Rock. Each year, SWELL attracts tens of thousands of visitors, making this a wonderful opportunity for our students’ creativity and hard work to be celebrated by the wider community.

We congratulate Mrs Olivier and all the students involved for their dedication and teamwork. We also thank Brendon and Hudson for generously assisting with the installation.

TMC families are encouraged to visit the festival and see Hinterland to the Horizon in person. The sculpture is located at Kropp Park on Paradise Parade, just beyond the playground when approaching from the small bridge.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate an outstanding achievement by Year 12 Visual Art student Lovisa, who has been selected to exhibit her artwork in Energies 26 at HOTA (Home of the Arts) on the Gold Coast.

Energies is a highly regarded annual exhibition that showcases the exceptional creative work of senior secondary students from across the Gold Coast. Having been running for almost 40 years, the exhibition provides students with the rare opportunity to have their work selected for display in a major public gallery alongside the work of other talented young artists.

Selection for Energies is a significant achievement. With work submitted by senior students from schools across the region, only a select number of artworks are chosen for inclusion in the exhibition. Lovisa’s selection is a wonderful recognition of the quality, creativity and thought evident in her artwork and reflects the high standard she has achieved in her Year 12 Visual Art studies.

It is a particularly special accomplishment in her final year of schooling, and we are delighted to see her work represented in such a prestigious exhibition. We congratulate Lovisa on this wonderful achievement and encourage our College community to visit HOTA and see her work on display.

What a ride it has been for our TMC mountain bike racers!

Our riders recently took on the Rocky Trail Academy Schools MBC Racing competition at Nerang, lining up against 21 schools from across South East Queensland and Northern NSW in a challenging day of mountain bike racing.

Competing in a field of talented young riders, our TMC team showed incredible skill, determination and plenty of mountain spirit. Their efforts saw Tamborine Mountain College finish an impressive 8th overall, a fantastic result against some strong competition.

A huge congratulations to Jet, Nixon, Leo and Louis, who represented TMC with pride and gave their all on the trails. Their achievement reflects not only their ability on the bike, but also the perseverance, courage and commitment required to tackle a demanding course and compete at this level.

For our riders, mountain biking is about more than crossing the finish line. It is about challenging yourself, embracing the tough climbs, navigating the unexpected and finding the confidence to keep pushing forward.

We are incredibly proud of our TMC riders and look forward to seeing where their wheels take them next!

Join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the Hippo and a colourful cast of characters as they escape their home in New York City and embark on a hilarious, heart-warming journey to the island of Madagascar. Along the way, they discover friendship, courage, adventure and what it really means to be part of a family.

With catchy songs, energetic dance numbers, plenty of laughs and a whole lot of animal antics, this production promises to be a fantastic celebration of the creativity, talent and enthusiasm of our Primary students.

Our Year 5 students have been taking part in a citizen science project focused on Powerful Owls and the native species that share their habitat. As part of the project, students are learning more about local wildlife and monitoring species such as possums and gliders, which form an important part of the Powerful Owl’s food web.

On Thursday 17 September, we were excited to welcome Wesley from Comfy Creatures to Tamborine Mountain College to begin installing our new wildlife nesting boxes. The project includes a range of boxes designed for different native species, including brushtail possums, ringtail possums and sugar gliders.

Each nesting box is fitted with a solar-powered camera, allowing students to monitor wildlife activity without disturbing the animals. Wesley showed the students how the nesting boxes, cameras and monitoring system work and explained how well-designed nesting boxes can provide valuable habitat for native wildlife.

Over the coming months, our Year 5 students will monitor the boxes, record their observations and analyse the data they collect. This will allow students to take part in authentic citizen science while developing their understanding of local ecosystems, wildlife monitoring and conservation.

We are looking forward to discovering which animals investigate — and hopefully move into — their new homes!

Uncovering the Secrets of the Powerful Owl, proudly supported by the Queensland Government — Engaging Science Grants.

The year 5 team!

Inspired by the theme “Harmony in Humanity” for the Lions International Peace Poster Competition, our Year 5 and 6 Visual Arts students explored how cultural differences can come together to create beauty and harmony.

Influenced by Lebanese artist Etel Adnan, students created imagined landscapes using colour, line and shape, incorporating patterns and visual elements from First Nations peoples of Australia, Māori, Islamic, Mexican, African and Japanese artistic and cultural traditions.

The artworks celebrate diversity and the beauty that emerges when different cultures come together in harmony.

Congratulations to Onyx R for being awarded 1st place from the schools in our region! Thank you to Nikki from the Lions Club who came to present Onyx his certificate. His artwork now goes to the next round of the competition. 

All ther students' artwork can be seen on display at the Tamborine Mountain Library on Main Street.

If you walk into the Friday Lunchtime Craft Club, you’ll hear these words "pull it through and make two, pull it through and make one," over and over.

Throughout Terms 2 and 3, Mrs Kramer and Mrs Hall have been teaching a wonderful group of Year 5 and 6 students how to knit and crochet. It has been fantastic to see students develop their skills, persevere when things get tricky, and take pride in creating something of their own.

In the photo, you can see Sammy’s finished project — a colourful drawstring bag! We’ve had so much fun building our craft skills and watching our students’ creativity and confidence grow along the way.

Our Prep and Year 1 students have been enjoying sharing their storybooks with one another! Year 1 students have spent the term creating their own Eric Carle-inspired stories, complete with colourful illustrations. They created their artwork using painted paper and the collage technique, just like Eric Carle.

It was wonderful to see the Year 1 students proudly reading their stories to our Prep students and sharing their creative work. The Prep students were fantastic listeners and enjoyed looking at all the colourful illustrations. What a lovely way to celebrate our young authors and illustrators! 📖✨

Cassette tapes to smartphones… our Year 2 students have been taking a fascinating trip through the generations!

As part of their learning, our Year 2 students have been exploring what life looked like across different generations and discovering just how much the world has changed over time.

Technology, communication, entertainment, fashion and everyday life, students have been comparing the experiences of different generations and discovering that some things that once seemed completely normal are now almost impossible to imagine!

The classroom became a journey through time as students explored everything from rotary phones and VHS tapes to CDs, iPods, gaming consoles and today's technology.

They even had the opportunity to hear first hand from our own TMC leaders, with Principal Mrs Stevens and Head of Primary Mr Stevens joining the students to share what life was like when they were growing up.

And, of course, no journey through the generations would be complete without a little dressing up!

Our Year 2 students embraced the challenge by coming dressed as their favourite generation, resulting in some fantastic throwback outfits, plenty of laughs and lots of conversations about the things their parents and grandparents grew up with.

For some of our students, however, discovering that people once had to use a phone that stayed in the house was quite the revelation! 

Learning about the past is about much more than remembering old technology. It helps our students understand change, appreciate how life has evolved and make connections between the past, present and future.

Most importantly, it encourages them to look ahead and imagine what might be possible in their own futures. Who knows? One day, today's smartphones might be the rotary phones of tomorrow!

What a wonderful afternoon we had for our 'A Walk Through Asia' presentation! It was lovely to welcome parents into our classroom to see the incredible work the students have been creating throughout the term.

Students worked in groups to explore India, China, South Korea and Japan, creating their own market stalls to represent their assigned country. Each group put so much thought and care into the design of their stall, with students working hard to make them colourful, authentic and informative. 

To connect our HASS and Mathematics learning, each group also created their own version of a traditional Asian chance game, giving visitors the opportunity to play while students explained the concepts of chance and probability behind their games.

The market stalls looked absolutely beautiful, and we were particularly impressed by the attention to detail. Many students created informative displays about daily life, housing, schooling, culture and trade with Australia, giving our visitors a glimpse into life in each country.

It was wonderful to see the students so proud of their work and confidently sharing their learning with their families. A huge well done to Year 6!

This term in Pre Prep, we have introduced something very special, our Eco Warrior program. Each week, our children take on a new warrior mission, discovering ways we can care for our environment, look after our kindy and make a positive difference in our world.

Our Eco Warriors have been busy helping in the garden, caring for our worm farm, keeping our spaces tidy and learning that even the smallest hands can make a big difference. Through these special missions, our children are developing a growing sense of responsibility, belonging and connection to the natural world.

This term, our biggest mission yet was the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. We feel incredibly privileged to be part of a special sustainability project with our local community and Judith from Landcare. Judith has generously donated Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines to our kindy and has shared her knowledge, time and love of the environment with our children.

Together, our Wattle and Lilly Pilly friends worked alongside Judith to move dirt, plant our new vines, spread mulch and water our precious new plants. With muddy hands, curious minds and plenty of happy smiles, the children were learning that caring for nature is something we can all do together.

We are hoping our new vines will grow and climb along the fence, creating a welcoming habitat for the beautiful Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. We will continue to care for our vines by watering them when the weather is dry and watching closely as they grow and change.

What makes this experience so special is the connection between our children, our kindy and our local community. Judith has helped us to see that sustainability is not just something we talk about. It is something we can experience, nurture and enjoy together.

Our Eco Warrior program is about more than completing missions. It is about growing kind, caring and capable little people who understand that they have an important place in our world.

We cannot wait to watch our garden grow, welcome new butterflies and see where our next Eco Warrior adventure takes us.

Young people, families and members of the wider community are invited to celebrate headspace Day on Thursday, 1 October, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Davidson Park, Beaudesert.

This year’s theme, “Do Nothing”, encourages young people to take a break from the pressure of always needing to be busy or productive. Attendees can enjoy a free sausage sizzle, ice blocks, beading and games, with plenty of space to relax, connect with others or simply do nothing.

The event is free, and everyone is welcome.
