A New Weekly Webinar Series for TMC Parents

We are thrilled to introduce our brand new TMC webinar series: My Teen, launching Thursday night 7:30pm, Week 2 of Term 3!

Raising a teenager is a journey filled with excitement, questions, challenges, and change. To support you in navigating this important chapter, our College is proud to present a specially curated weekly series designed to empower, inform and connect our parent community.

Each  Thursday night at 7:30pm until the final webinar, you will hear directly from our experienced College leaders as they guide you through the developmental stages of adolescence and common struggles during important milestones through Senior School. From emotional growth and brain development to identity formation, communication strategies, and supporting academic resilience, this series will unpack what’s happening behind the scenes as your child journeys through their teen years.

My Teen is here to help you understand the "why" behind the behaviours and provide practical strategies to walk alongside your child with confidence.

The below table will provide the webinar details in depth, as we work with you to strengthen the partnership between home and school, one developmental milestone at a time.

TAKING EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
We are now taking expressions of interest in the 2025 Tournament of Minds problem-solving challenge. Tournament of Minds presents an opportunity for students to connect with peers and teachers, working collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment. This year, we will be having teams of students from Years 5-10.

ABOUT TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

Tournament of Minds is a problem solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years. Tournament's aim is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment. Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. Students are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of the following disciplines: The Arts, STEM, Language Literature or Social Sciences. 

IMPORTANT DATES / COMMITMENT
Once the challenges are released (Week 1, Term 3), students will need to attend weekly meetings which will be determined by team facilitators. The students have six weeks to respond to the challenge scenario. 

The Gold Coast Regional presentation will take place on Sunday 24th August (every student involved will need to be available on this date). If your child’s team successfully qualifies for the state final, this will be held in Brisbane on Saturday 13th September. Please keep this date in mind, as most of our teams made it through to state finals last year.

Trevor Jamieson, Teacher Aide

This week, we are thrilled to give a HUGE heartfelt thank you to one of our original and much loved Teacher Aides, Trevor Jamieson who has his last few days with us at the College this week. Trevor has been a constant source of kindness, care, and quiet strength. His gentle nature, support, and heartfelt dedication have left a beautiful mark on the hearts of thousands of students, and families over the years.

What inspired you to become a teacher aide?
I am inspired to be a TA because I love helping children.

If you weren’t a teacher aide, what career would you have pursued?
I would have been a cameraman or an artist.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing the children I work with wanting to be at school and have happy moments, also seeing them grow up. 

What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I love to paint and I have some paintings on display in places around Tamborine Mountain.

What’s a memorable moment from your time at Tamborine Mountain College?
I have had so many but my first day was very memorable.

Share with us some of your greatest achievements in life?
Being a dad and husband are my two greatest achievements.

What’s a piece of advice you wish you could give your younger self?
Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

What’s one thing your students have taught you?
To be in the moment.

Riviera are one of Australia's biggest boat builders, and they are doing their annual apprenticeship information sessions for years 11 and 12 students interested in getting started in the industry.

There are three information sessions being held on July 15, 23 and 31 (you only need to attend one) that you can attend with your student to do a tour of the factory and get all of the relevant information.

Automation and robotics have played a vital role in various industries and have impacted on the evolution of worker skillsets and employment opportunities. Technology has advanced automation and robotics in a way to improve our way of life and to provide assistance to many diverse groups, including their use in battle.

This term, Ms Ross’s Year 9 STEM have taken on the challenge of building a LEGO Sumobot robots to take on their opponents in battle. Sumobots are lego based robots that battle each other to remove the other team from the battle zone or to flip the opponent over, so that they can no longer compete. Year 9 STEM had a blast taking each other on in battle, and it was fantastic to see them engaged in such a rich learning task that encouraged innovation and collaboration.

We are excited to announce a fundraising event happening next Wednesday, June 18, organised by our Student Representative Council (SRC). This special fundraiser aims to support the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. Our students were inspired by the story of one of our SRC members who has a family member recently affected by brain cancer. They are planning a fun obstacle course to raise awareness and funds for this vital cause.

• Participation Donation: $5 cash donation per student
• Fundraising Goal: $1,200

Brain cancer is a devastating disease, particularly impacting young Australians. It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children and adults under 40 in Australia. Despite its severity, brain cancer research remains underfunded. The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation's mission is to rapidly increase brain cancer survival rates and improve the quality of life for those affected.

We encourage all students to take part in the obstacle course and contribute the $5 donation. If everyone participates, we can reach our goal of $1,200, providing substantial support to this cause.

This week, in anticipation of next term's AB Paterson Public Speaking Competition, students of Year 4 participated in some practice speeches delivered in front of their peers, Ms Ryall, Mrs Hiron and Mr Haskins. The students were tasked with composing a speech with the topic 'Laughter is the Best Medicine' and delivering the speech with confidence, emotion and clarity. Each of the students who volunteered did an amazing job at speaking to an audience, something that is no easy feat. We look forward to next term when we can report on the ongoing success of these young orators.

The recent Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival held at Long Road sporting complex, was a resounding success, fostering an atmosphere of energetic participation and camaraderie that truly enveloped the entire upper primary community. Students enthusiastically engaged in a wide array of track and field events, demonstrating impressive sportsmanship and determination. The vibrant energy was palpable throughout the day, with cheers echoing across the oval as students encouraged their peers and celebrated individual achievements. Beyond the competitive spirit, the carnival provided a wonderful opportunity for students to develop new skills, build resilience, and strengthen their bonds within their year levels and across the primary years. The positive feedback from students, staff, and parents alike underscored the event's success in creating a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved. We look forward now to our next athletic event in Term 4 of the Year 3 - 6 Swimming Carnival to close out our carnival program.

During weeks 8 and 9 our curious and creative Grade 2 students have been diving into an exciting investigation called “Tasty Travels”! This deliciously fun inquiry explores where their favourite foods come from and how these foods connect them to different places around the world.

As part of this engaging unit, students are working on their very own Tasty Travels booklets, using research skills to explore the world through food. This investigation links directly to the Year 2 HASS curriculum, where students learn about places and their features, connections to places, and how people’s lives are influenced by where they live and what surrounds them.

Each student has chosen a favourite food and is investigating:

• The natural, managed, and constructed features of the place where it comes from
• How we could travel to this location and what might affect our ability to get there
• Other reasons people may be connected to that place, including culture, history, or family

We've seen some incredible curiosity and creativity as students discover not just the geography behind their chosen foods, but also the fascinating stories that come with them.

Did you know?

🍕 Pizza was invented in Naples, Italy, as an affordable and quick meal for workers.
🥪 And the sandwich? It was created for the Earl of Sandwich in England, who wanted to eat his meat without stopping his card game!

Years 2-6 have been busy preparing for their upcoming Classroom Music Concert. 

I would like to extend an invitation for parents to attend this concert next Tuesday 17th at 2pm in the school Hall.

Meanwhile in Year 1, students have been developing their gross motor, impulse control and teamwork skills through various singing activities. We have been using the stretchy band to follow movements in a song and discover the foundations of what it means to play in an ensemble. When students are all holding on to the stretchy band they can either move together in the same direction or end up bumping into each other. Students lent backwards to a lying down position and to pull themselves back upright, they needed to all hold on tight and work together otherwise some could get left behind.

In the lower years, students love to finish their Music session with the teacher singing a storybook. These books can be based around a song, have rhythmical and rhyming elements or Mrs Ivers makes up a melody or rap to match the words. A great moment to calm students, get ready for a transition and to hone in on their active listening skills.

One of our talented Year 9 students, Shae L, has been selected as a finalist in the D’Arcy Doyle Art Awards, one of the region’s most prestigious art competitions. This annual exhibition showcases works from artists across Australia, with only a small number of student entries chosen for public display.

Shae’s artwork will be exhibited at the Mudgeeraba Memorial Hall from 27 June to 7 July. The exhibition is open daily and provides a great opportunity to view a range of outstanding artworks over the school holidays. We encourage our community to visit and support this celebration of creativity.  Congratulations to Shae on this wonderful achievement.
