Last Wednesday, our Year 8 Media Arts students swapped the classroom for the spectacular scenery of Tamborine Mountain as they tried their hand at location filming.

The class visited two beautiful local destinations, Witches Falls and Curtis Falls, where students worked in teams to capture footage in a real-world setting. Surrounded by rainforest, walking trails and waterfalls, they experimented with camera shots, angles, movement and composition to create mood and tell stories visually.

It was wonderful to see the students embracing the challenge, collaborating enthusiastically and making creative use of the mountain’s natural environment. The excursion gave them a valuable opportunity to put their classroom learning into practice while experiencing some of the remarkable locations right on our doorstep.

After a fantastic day of filming, the group finished with a walk along Gallery Walk and a well-earned ice cream from Mamma Duck’s. It was the perfect ending to a memorable day of creativity, teamwork and adventure!

This past weekend Teegan M, Southport Yacht Club’s Junior Commodore, took part in her final duties with the Club’s 80th Annual Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet, with Teegan dipping the flag at each vessel whilst Father Don blessed them. Day 2 saw the Breaking of the Flag ceremony which marks the start of the sailing season with her parting message to all who sail: “I wish you fair winds and following seas, safe passage and safe return!”

Over her 2 year term as Jnr Commodore, Teegan supported the Youth Sailing Program by encouraging their participation to enjoy the wonderful sport of sailing. She also represented the Youth on the Sailing Committee and contributed to the vision of making Southport Yacht Club a premier yacht club.

The Breaking of the Flag ceremony was followed by the first race of the season, the “Dash 4 Cash”, with this being the highlight of this 2 day event for Teegan as she took 1st place in her Division, ahead of 2 sailors who recently returned from competing Internationally at the Youth World Championships!

This immersive program is open to Year 8 and 9 students across Queensland with an interest in STEM who are considering their future subject choices. The SPARQ-ed Junior Research Engagement Program is a unique opportunity for students to explore hands-on introductory biomedical research using the latest equipment and technology in the PC2 Lab at the  Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Woolloongabba, Brisbane, working alongside SPARQ-ed teachers and scientists from TRI. Across the 2 days, students will work in a team environment on a research project, to examine, test and analyze your results. They will gain hands-on lab experience and develop communication and research skills.
