Term 4 Insider #2
Year 5 News – Term 4 Update
What a busy and exciting term it is shaping up to be in Year 5!
In English, students have been crafting their own ballads based on natural hazard events. They have been working hard to weave rhyme, rhythm and storytelling together to capture dramatic moments in poetic form, and we have seen some truly impressive writing!
In Mathematics, students have been exploring chance and probability. Through hands on activities and experiments, they have been learning how to describe and compare the likelihood of different outcomes, use fractions to represent probability, and make predictions based on data. It has been fantastic to see their curiosity and reasoning skills in action.
In HASS, our focus has been on bushfires and how they start, their impact on communities and the environment, and the ways people prepare for and manage fire risks. Students have explored fire safety strategies and learned how Australian communities adapt to living in bushfire prone areas.
In Science, students have investigated erosion and how human activity shapes and changes the Earth’s surface. They have examined real world examples such as the Gold Coast Spit’s sand bypass system to understand how technology helps to reduce erosion and protect our coastlines.
In Technology, students are developing their design skills using Tinkercad software. They are now beginning to create models of self propelled rescue boats, which will be 3D printed later this term. It has been a fantastic combination of creativity, problem solving and engineering.
It has been a vibrant term filled with learning and events! We have already celebrated Day for Daniel and World Teachers Day, and the SRC soccer competition is well underway. Still to come are the Swimming Carnival, Primary Disco, Awards Night and End of Year Celebrations with plenty more fun ahead!
Years 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival – Friday 14 November
Get ready to make a splash! Our Years 3 to 6 Swimming Carnival will be held next Friday 14 November at the local pool. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of events including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
What to Bring and Wear:
- College sports uniform and sports hat
- Appropriate swimwear for races (no bikinis) and a swimming cap
- Optional - Goggles
- TMC Sports Bag, containing a towel, water bottle, and sunscreen
- Snacks and lunch
- House-coloured accessories such as zinc or headbands may be worn. Kindly do not bring streamers, as these often end up breaking
Students will have an early lunch at school before travelling to the pool. As there will be no formal afternoon tea break, please pack additional snacks for the afternoon. The pool canteen will be open for small purchases (lolly bags, ice creams, bottled water, Gatorade), and students should bring no more than $5 if they wish to buy something.
The carnival is always a highlight of the school year, celebrating teamwork, perseverance and sportsmanship. Families are warmly invited to come along and cheer from the side-lines as our students give their best in and out of the pool. We look forward to a fantastic day of fun, fitness and friendly competition!
TMC Stationery Drive for Beaucare
Our TMC Stationery Drive for Beaucare is well under way! We are collecting new and unused school supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks, coloured pencils, glue sticks, rulers and more to help local families in need across the Scenic Rim.
