Term 3 Insider #2

23 August 2025

Welcome to this edition of our Year 5 newsletter. So far it has been a busy and exciting term filled with learning, creativity and special events. In class, students have been exploring animal adaptations in Science, developing their skills in information report writing in English, and investigating what it takes to build and sustain a small island community in HASS. In Mathematics, we have been learning about angles, 3D shapes and their nets, applying these concepts in practical and engaging ways.

Students have shown great enthusiasm in their studies and have embraced opportunities to work together, try new things and celebrate their achievements. We also have some exciting events planned for the remainder of Term 3, including College Photo Day and the much-anticipated Birds of Prey Show, and we look forward to sharing these experiences with your children.

Science Week

This year’s Science Week was full of curiosity, discovery, and hands-on learning. Year 5 students enjoyed an Owl Pellet Investigation in the secondary science labs with Andrew, Lucy and Dr Nick, exploring the diets of owls and seeing real science in action.

We were also lucky to have Craig, Emily in 5 Vic’s dad, share his fascinating fossil collection. Students were amazed by the range of fossils and the history they reveal. We are very grateful to Craig for giving his time and knowledge.

Science Week was a wonderful reminder of how exciting and inspiring science can be!

Book Week Dress-up Day

On Thursday we celebrated Book Week Dress-Up Day, and what a fantastic sight it was! The creativity and effort that went into the costumes were truly wonderful, with students arriving as beloved characters from books, comics, and stories of all kinds. It was a joyful day that highlighted the magic of reading and imagination. A big thank you to families for supporting students in bringing their favourite characters to life!

Stationery Reminder

As we move through the semester, it’s important that all students are well prepared for their learning. Please ensure your child has a wired set of headphones, along with enough exercise books, pencils, protractor and compass, calculator and other stationery to last for the remainder of the term. All items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name. We encourage you to talk with your child about what supplies they may be missing or still need to support their learning.

College Photo Day – Thursday 4th September

Our annual College Photo Day will be held on Thursday 4th September. This is always a special occasion, capturing lasting memories of the school year. We would like to remind you of the following:

  • All students are required to wear their full formal uniform on the day.
  • Please ensure uniforms are clean, neat, and worn correctly.
  • Boys must wear their tie.
  • Students’ hairstyles are to be neat, well presented, conservative, neatly brushed and groomed.

Families are also asked to review the College’s uniform, hair and jewellery expectations before Photo Day to help students present themselves respectfully. These can be found at: Student Uniform and Personal Appearance Policy.

Thank you for supporting our students in looking their best. We look forward to seeing many bright smiles on the day!

Visitors from Japan

This Term, our Year 5 students had the wonderful opportunity to welcome a group of visitors from Gosen, Japan. It was an exciting cultural exchange, giving both groups the chance to learn from each other and share what life is like in school.

Our guests joined in with English and Maths lessons, experiencing a typical day as a TMC Year 5 student. In return, they treated us to a showcase of Japanese culture, including calligraphy, origami, traditional games, and more. The room was filled with laughter, curiosity, and plenty of “wows” as students compared school life in Australia and Japan.

It was a memorable day that strengthened connections across cultures and left our Year 5s with new friends and fresh inspiration.

Helping Your Child Access Their TMC Account from Home

Accessing student accounts from home should now be straightforward. In most cases, your child simply uses their school email address (ending in @tmc.qld.edu.au) along with the same password they use daily on their Chromebooks at school.

If login issues occur, your child may need to use their Student ID code. This can be found on their Student Card (beneath the barcode) or on their bag tag. When prompted for an Employee ID, enter the last five digits of the Student ID code.

For step-by-step instructions, visit https://www.tmc.qld.edu.au/resources/for-students/it-howtos and look for the 'Access from Home' page.
