Term 3 Insider 1
Welcome to Term 3!
I hope you all had a relaxing break and are ready for another exciting term of learning. We’ve got some fantastic topics on the go that I know the students will really enjoy. In Science and English, we’ll be learning about the Powerful Owl, combining research skills with creative and informative writing. In HASS, we’ll explore the concepts of needs and wants and how they shape our lives and communities. Visual Arts will tie in beautifully with English, as students design and create their own magazine articles inspired by the style of National Geographic Kids.
It’s shaping up to be a creative and hands-on term with plenty of opportunities for students to think critically, design thoughtfully, and express themselves in new ways. Read on to see what’s happening across each learning area.
Spotlight on the Powerful Owl
This term, students are diving into a cross-curricular project centred around the Powerful Owl, a fascinating apex predator native to our local area. This marks the fourth year we’ve partnered with the Powerful Owl Project from BirdLife Australia, giving students a unique opportunity to take part in real-world conservation science. In Science, we’re investigating animal adaptations and how the Powerful Owl survives and thrives in its environment. In English, students are using their research to write engaging and informative articles, inspired by the style of National Geographic Kids. We’re focusing on clear structure, scientific language, and writing that both informs and captivates. In Visual Arts, students will design their own magazine spreads, learning about layout, graphic design, and visual communication.
It’s a fantastic way for students to connect their learning across subjects while deepening their understanding of native wildlife and how we can help protect it.
Maths This Term
This term in Maths, we’re exploring a range of practical and visual concepts. Students will learn how to measure and calculate area and perimeter, tell time using both analogue and digital formats, and identify and classify angles in shapes and real-world objects. We’ll also dive into location and transformation, using grid maps and coordinates to describe movement and position. These topics offer plenty of hands-on learning opportunities and help students build skills they can apply in everyday situations.
HASS – Needs, Wants, and Wise Choices
In HASS this term, students are exploring how we make decisions about needs and wants in a world where resources are limited. They’ll learn to tell the difference between goods and services, understand the roles of consumers and businesses, and investigate how the choices we make affect individuals, families, and communities. Through real-life examples and problem-solving tasks, students will begin to think like young economists, considering priorities, value systems, and opportunity costs. This unit is a great way to build financial literacy and develop responsible decision-making skills that they can apply in their everyday lives.
Jump Rope for Heart
We’re excited to be taking part in Jump Rope for Heart this term—a fun program by the Heart Foundation that gets kids active while raising funds for lifesaving
heart research and support. Skipping ropes will be available during break times, and students will be learning new skipping skills, staying active, and learning about heart health along the way.
Families are encouraged to register online at www.jumprope.org.au/parents, where you’ll find extra skipping resources and a personal fundraising page to track your child’s progress. Students can earn virtual badges, set goals, and share updates with family and friends.
It’s a great way to boost fitness, have fun, and support an important cause. Look out for the ‘Parent and Guardian Guide’ flyer coming home soon—or visit the website if you missed it.
Welcome, Mrs Mitchell!
Starting Monday, 5VIC will be welcoming a preservice teacher, Mrs Mitchell, into our classroom for six weeks. She is completing her final teaching placement for university and will be taking some of the lessons during her time with us. The students are looking forward to working with her, and we’re excited to have her as part of our class team this term.
Uniform Days
Just a quick reminder that uniform days remain the same as last term. Sports uniforms are to be worn on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with formal uniform on Mondays and Thursdays. Thanks for helping students arrive dressed and ready for the day!
Maths Tutorials
Maths tutorials will run again this term from Week 2 to Week 9, every Tuesday from 2:50–3:30pm. These sessions are a great way to revise concepts and build confidence. At the end of each session, we’ll walk students to the car park, please arrive on time to collect your child.
All students who participated last term are welcome to join again. We’ll also contact families directly if we believe your child would benefit from attending.
