Welcome to Term 3!
Term 3 is shaping up to be an exciting and action-packed term for Year 1! We have some fantastic learning experiences ahead, with Superheroes, Eric Carle stories, push and pull forces in action and becoming a computer typing wizard.
Here is a quick look at what is coming up!
What are we learning?
English – Narrative Writing
Students will explore the features and structure of narrative texts. We are focusing on author Eric Carle as we explore his work. The students will develop their storytelling skills by creating imaginative characters, describing settings, and writing simple stories with a clear beginning, problem and resolution. This unit encourages creativity while building sentence fluency, vocabulary and confidence as young writers. At the end of the unit, they will have created a story book about a animal that we will publish to our class library.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will continue developing their number knowledge with a focus on counting, addition and subtraction strategies. They will also explore analogue time, mapping and positional language while learning to read simple maps and follow directions. Throughout the term, students will strengthen their problem-solving skills by using strategies such as drawing diagrams, making tables, finding patterns, acting out problems, guessing and checking, and identifying useful information.
Science – Pushes and Pulls
Our students will investigate the forces of pushes and pulls through a range of engaging hands-on experiments. They will explore concepts such as friction, sinking and floating, and discover how forces affect movement in everyday life. The unit will conclude with students designing their own playground to apply their understanding of physical forces.
HASS – Families Past and Present
The students will investigate how families have changed over time by comparing life in the past with life today. They will explore different family structures, the changing roles of family members and the traditions that make every family unique. Through family photographs and interviews with parents and grandparents, students will develop an appreciation of how communities and family life continue to change across generations. To support this learning, we kindly ask each student to bring in a recent (non-original) family photo of their choice to share during class discussions. We will need the photo for Week 7.
Health – Superheroes
Following on from our Term 2 Health focus on RESPECT, the students are discovering their own "superpowers" as they build confidence, resilience and a positive sense of identity. Through fun and reflective activities, they will celebrate their personal growth, recognise their strengths and achievements, and learn how everyone has unique qualities that make them special. So far we have focused on how much they have changed since being a baby. It has been so wonderful to hear them identify their superpowers: I have a superpower of making friends, I have a superpower of helping others, I have a superpower of caring for my brother, I have a superpower of doing my morning jobs.
Digital Technologies – Digital Skills
Students will continue developing their digital technology skills by using Google Docs to create and format text, insert and label images, and use digital cameras. As they build confidence using technology safely and creatively, students will finish the term by emailing a photograph they have taken to their families. If your child uses a computer keyboard at home it would be great for them to practice typing their name and to hold shift for the capital letters. They are learning how to use the arrow keys to move the cursor, backspace, space, control A.
Visual Art - Paperbank collages
Students will explore the colourful and creative art techniques used by author and illustrator Eric Carle. Through painting, colour washing, splattering, brushstrokes, scratching, printing and collage, they will experiment with a variety of artistic processes and textures. Students will apply these techniques to create their own unique artworks, culminating in a mixed-media animal collage displayed within its natural habitat.
New student
We are also excited to welcome Alice Mackie to 1VAL and the TMC community. We hope she quickly feels at home and enjoys being part of our Year 1 cohort.

An Exciting Term Ahead
There is certainly plenty to look forward to in Term 3. We are excited to welcome the students back and cannot wait to see them continue to grow.
