2025 Term 2 - A Look Inside Our Learning This Term

04 February 2025

Dear Parents,

This newsletter is designed to give you a deeper insight into some of the key learning areas your child will be exploring this term. While these are not all of the subjects we cover, they are some of the most prominent topics we will focus on in class.

We also want to highlight ways you can support your child’s learning at home. Many of the online programs we use, such as Mathspace, Literacy Pro, Timestables.com and Google Classroom, are accessible to students from home. Encouraging regular practice and discussing what they are learning can greatly enhance their confidence and progress.

If you have any questions about these topics or how you can further support your child’s learning, please feel free to reach out.

Helping Your Child Access Their TMC Account from Home

Logging into school accounts from home can sometimes be tricky. If your child encounters a login issue, they may need to use their Student ID code first. This can be found on their Student Card (beneath the barcode) or on their bag tag.

When prompted for an Employee ID, enter the last five digits of the Student ID code.

For step-by-step instructions, visit https://www.tmc.qld.edu.au/resources/for-students/it-howtos and look for the 'Access from Home' page.

ENGLISH

English Speaking & Writing

This term, our class will be learning how to craft and deliver persuasive speeches. Students will explore the power of language and how it can be used to influence, convince, and inspire others. Through engaging examples, modelled texts, and classroom debates, they’ll build the skills to write and present their own persuasive speeches on topics they care about.

How Will Students Build Their Persuasive Speaking Skills?

Understanding the Purpose of Persuasion – Exploring how and why people try to persuade others.

Identifying Persuasive Techniques – Learning about emotive language, rhetorical questions, repetition, and strong modality.

Planning a Clear Argument – Developing a clear stance with relevant reasons and examples.

Structuring a Persuasive Speech – Organising ideas with a strong introduction, body, and conclusion.

Writing for Impact – Choosing powerful words and sentence types to create interest and influence.

Speaking with Confidence – Practising voice control, eye contact, and expression when presenting.

Peer Feedback & Reflection – Listening to others and offering constructive feedback to improve speaking skills.

By learning how to express their opinions clearly and respectfully, students will gain confidence not only as writers and speakers, but also as critical thinkers.

How Can Parents Help?
Chat with your child about topics they feel passionate about. Encourage them to explain their opinion and ask for reasons why. Practising short speeches at home can also help build fluency and confidence before classroom presentations.

SCIENCE

This term in Science, we are diving into the world of matter — everything around us! Students will explore the three main states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases, and investigate how materials can change from one state to another.

What Will Students Be Learning?

What Matter Is Made Of – Understanding that all things are made of particles, and how these particles behave in solids, liquids, and gases.

Changing States – Exploring how heating or cooling affects the state of matter (like melting, freezing, evaporating, and condensing).

Hands-On Investigations – Observing and recording what happens during experiments involving everyday materials.

Scientific Thinking – Asking questions, predicting outcomes, and drawing conclusions from what they see and do.

Real-Life Connections – Linking what they learn to real-world scenarios like cooking, weather, and water cycles.

Through fun, interactive lessons and experiments, students will deepen their understanding of the physical world and learn to think like scientists — curious, observant, and open to discovery.

HASS

This term in HASS, we’re travelling back in time to the 1800s to explore the Australian Gold Rush and the development of the British colonies. Students will investigate why people came to Australia, what life was like during the Gold Rush, and how these events impacted First Nations Australians, the environment, and the growing nation.

What Will Students Be Learning?

Colonial Australia – Understanding why Britain established new colonies after 1800 and how they developed over time.

The Gold Rush – Exploring how the discovery of gold changed the economy, population, and way of life in Australia.

Significant People – Investigating the stories of individuals and groups, including First Nations Australians, migrants, and explorers, who shaped our history.

Cause & Effect Thinking – Looking at how events from the past influenced the growth of towns, laws, and communities.

Mapping & Inquiry Skills – Using maps, timelines, and historical sources to explore changes and draw conclusions about life in colonial times.

Living Wax Museum Project
To bring history to life, students will be completing a Living Wax Museum project as part of their homework this term. Each student will research and take on the role of a significant historical figure from colonial Australia. At the end of the term, they’ll dress in character and present a short speech in the style of a living statue. It’s a fun and creative way for students to demonstrate what they’ve learned and build confidence in public speaking and you are invited (more details will follow).
