Do you know a family who is looking for an Exceeding-rated Kindy or Pre-Prep? We have just released additional places in our Early Learning Centre. Contact Acting Director, Ms Rachel Fernandez at elcdirector@tmc.qld.edu.au for more information.
We have big news for the senior campus. Our Student Representative Council (SRC) has been chosen! As usual, each grade has a male and female representative whose job it is to consider what events or activities might be run in the school to inspire the TMC values.
Our representatives for this year are:
Year 7: Scarlett Thomson and Logan Hayden-Du Plessis
Year 8: Amelia Chapman and Sean Robinson
Year 9: Gemma Close and Ethan Hodder
Year 10: Jess Dalton and Keane Diong
Year 11: Madelyn Graham and Lachlan Williams
Year 12: Cleah Sullivan and Dylan Sippel
This year sees two new teachers taking the helm of the SRC. Both Mr Horn and Ms Fletcher have stepped up to support our students. They will be running meetings every second Thursday. Mr Horn has said that he hopes, “The SRC will host many events and drive initiatives targeted at student wellbeing”. Ms Fletcher hopes that the members will achieve their goals and that the student body will be happy.
As members of the Student Representative Council, students have the opportunity to represent the College at events such as Open Day and Anzac Day. The SRC also helps set up free dress days throughout the year. A bonus of being a part of the SRC is that it helps prepare you for leadership positions in later years and is something you can add to your resume.
So we would like to extend a warm welcome and a cheerful congratulations to all the new members of 2021’s Tamborine Mountain College Student Representative Council.

Year 12 Biology are preparing for their field work excursion to Toohey Forest by testing their skills at our frog pond on campus. They received a briefing from Darren from Toohey Forest Environmental Educating Centre, who was impressed by how engaged our students were with their work and the world around them. They are well on their way to becoming ecologists of the future.

The Year 11 French students have been investigating sports played in francophone countries. As a practical experience, the class played la pètanque or bowls using French to describe how to play the game and discuss their technique. There were even a few contentious rounds where maths skills were called upon to find the victor!

Students from years 10, 11 and 12 visited the Scenic Rim Regional Council's "World of Work" Careers Fair on Thursday this week. Students were able to chat to local Scenic Rim employers, training organisations, and apprenticeship and traineeship companies, about what skills they need for certain types of jobs and industries and what training is available in the region. Some of our students even enjoyed testing out some job skills using VR Headsets.

TMC prides itself on having a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students to join and explore. One of the most coveted extracurricular activities that our school offers is debating. This intense academic sport is a great way for students to practice public speaking, as well as explore different ideas about the world around them. Debating is a popular and well-respected activity in schools and universities across Australia and around the world.
Here at TMC, we will see the students of our school heading off to begin the first round of debates on Wednesday next week. The two Junior teams (Years 7 & 8), coached by Miss McCredden, the Intermediate team (Years 9 & 10), coached by Mr Haskins and the Senior team (Years 11 & 12), coached by Ms Green, have all been diligently working on their debate speeches in preparation for next week’s bombastic battle of wits and logic. The four teams will head off to different schools on the coast to go head to head with debaters representing a wide range of Gold Coast schools.
With topics like, "Queensland should lower the age at which alleged criminals are tried as adults" and, “Children under 14 should not have mobile phones”, this year’s first round of debates are looking to be heated and engaging events and a much needed release for those debaters who haven’t been able to argue since the start of last year’s lockdown (except with their parents that is). While, as always, these debates will remain civil and respectful, it will still be exciting to see how opinions will compare and clash, especially with such contentious issues.
So, if you have the time and you see a member of one of the teams be sure to encourage them before their first round.

As is customary, the TMC Year 12 cohort have been hard at work perfecting their performance for this year’s TMC’s Got Talent. However, this year will be like no other. Upping the ante for this year's performance, the TMC Year 12s are guaranteeing a show like no other.
With coordination and choreography primarily overseen by the talented Nichols House Captain, CeCe Knight, the students have spent countless lunchtimes rehearsing and perfecting the performance and are excited to see the reactions of the audience. We don’t want to divulge too much information and ruin the spectacle of the performance, but as one of the participants, I can tell you that we’ve compiled a mix of different songs, skits and choreography to keep you all entertained. As a result, we are certain students will not be bored by this performance. It’s fun, lively and engaging and it’s truly something you don’t want to miss!
So there you have it, this will be a performance like none other and is certain to blow away the audience and judges! Be sure to remember your gold coin.

Today our school community dressed in orange to celebrate Harmony Day and to raise awareness for the National Day of Action Against Bullying.
Students from Pre-Prep to Year 12 participated in activities that explored the cultural diversity of our school and what it means to be part of a community focused on kindness.
We say, "No" to bullying, and "Yes" to kindness.
Harmony Week has been amazing in Prep. The first step for us came last week as we looked at which languages other than English were the most prevalent in Australian society. We ended up deciding to explore cultural aspects of China, India, Greece, Spain and Italy. We have made lanterns, done cultural dances, made clay bowls with etchings on them, made food and had Ancient Roman Gladiator battles - just like the old TV show. It has been wonderful to weave this in with conversations about respecting and celebrating difference, and discussing ways to be good friends and stop bullying. It has been a big and wonderful week.
Mr Stuart Fern
Year 4 has been very busy this week investigating the importance of coming together and accepting and embracing our differences in not just our class but our school and community. We have linked up this week's event with our Culture topic. This week our class has investigated what a community means to us, how our culture affects different parts of Australia and in our community. We loved discussing the different food that our class enjoys and we looked at the similarities and differences with our snacks compared to other countries. 4 Vic had a class discussion about ways we can embrace other cultures and the effects that not embracing others can have on our lives and of others.
We enjoyed a song that we found this week by Australian artist Ben Lee. The song, We're All in This Together, talks about the importance of people working together, and we came to the realisation that music is philosophy you can listen to!
Mr Cameron Hall
This week, the students of Year Six have been celebrating Harmony Week. We began with discussions and activities exploring indigenous history - the first culture of our nation. We then explored the many benefits of living in a multicultural society, and came to the realisation that we are very lucky to live "down under". We wrote messages on balloons inspiring all TMC students to adopt this year’s Harmony Week theme: Everyone belongs!
Mrs Deborah Horn
In Music we celebrated Harmony Week with students from Prep to Year 6 learning a Nigerian song 'Funge Alafia' which means welcome, good health and peace to you. We sang the song in unison with actions and in 2-part canon. Year 6 students worked on their ensemble skills by learning to play the melody and an accompaniment pattern on tuned percussion instruments of xylphones, glockenspiels and resonator bells.
Mrs Felicity Addison
Kindy
Our Kindy children put their bowling and turn-taking skills into action on Wednesday. One friend was in charge of stacking the skittles while the rest of the group patiently waited for their turn to bowl the ball. At the ELC, we value the learning that occurs through the children's play. Mrs Hinkins supported and encouraged students, role modelling first how to bowl, then asking the children to verbalize, “Who’s turn is it next?”
Prep-Prep
Pre-Prep made Damper together during class while exploring the interest of being outdoors, focusing on camping and building enclosures. We introduced ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ and we discussed how Indigenous peoples live off the land and what it means to look after the land we reside. The centre has published our Reconciliation Action Plan which we see is an important step in valuing and educating everyone about our unique culture in Australia.
To continue last week's learning from the visit to Prep, the VAL class explored frogs on Thursday through a drawing experience and listening to the Dreamtime story called ‘Tiddalick.’ The children were intrigued and focused to see Tiddlilick grow in size after drinking the water. To develop comprehension skills we had a recount of what happened and who were the main characters in the story.
A popular story has been ‘The Gruffalo’ where the children have again extended their recount skills. Retelling a story can be done in many ways; we offer the children different materials to do this using their imagination to create their own ‘Gruffalos’.
This week we are celebrating diversity with the children by participating in Harmony Week. Everyone Belongs at Pre-Prep, we are all unique with different interests and values, but together we make up our class community. We can do this in harmony and we have explored what this means by providing provisions to facilitate this. We have also invited families to share any special interests or beliefs and values they may have.
OSHC
We saw some beautiful creations come alive on a mosaic making afternoon. One group spent some time ripping colourful pieces of tissue paper to add to a photocopied sheet to give it 3D effect.
Reminders:
Thank you for your support.

It's almost that time of the year again. The time of year for students at TMC to show off their special talents, gifts and abilities. Yes TMC’s Got Talent is back!
Each year in Term 1, the school hosts a talent show where students from all Secondary grades can perform acts to win some awesome prizes. The event will be held on the 31st of March (last day of Term 1) and will be open only to students. Every year, there are always many creative talents on show and this year will be no different. The always amazing Ms Green is helping prepare the students for the big day and we were lucky enough to speak with her to gain some insight into this year’s event.
Where and when will the event take place?
TMCs got talent will be on Wednesday, March 31st, starting from 1:30pm in the TMC stage.
What types of talents will be shown off?
We have some really great acts this year. We have singers, dancers, instrumentalists and also a sword martial art routine.
What are you most looking forward to?
I think the extreme sword routine will be pretty exciting for something different, but I just love seeing all the students performing and being so brave and courageous up on the stage.
What are some of the prizes that are on offer?
We have our JB HI FI gift cards and we also have a little something for all of the entrants this year, but that will be revealed at the event.
What skills do you think are required to go into the talent show?
I think commitment to whatever the act is. You can see the passion the students have but also the time they spend, so the rehearsal portion of things is really important as well. Also I think the kids are amazing because they are brave and willing to share their gifts with the whole school, which is pretty cool.
What attributes are you looking for in participants?
The judges will score on things like entertainment value, skills or technique, and also the audience response.
Of course the students aren’t the only ones who get to perform. Ms Jacka is responsible for the organisation of the famous, or dare we say notorious, teachers’ act. When questioned about it she managed to maintain an ironclad grip on any information. What she was willing to divulge was that it is always a lot of fun to organise and that the teachers can’t help but laugh when they get together to rehearse. When asked for hints, Ms Jacka firmly stated in traditional Ms Jacka style, “No hints. You will just have to wait and see and enjoy it.”
So there you have it folks, we will just have to wait and see what becomes of this year's talent show, which I think, like always, will be exciting, humorous, moving and most of all fun to watch. So don’t forget your gold coin donation on the last day of Term 31/03/2021.
