This week on Wednesday, Year 4 to Year 12 travelled down the mountain to Jimboomba for the College's annual Athletics Carnival. The day was held at the Jimboomba Athletics Centre under a beautiful, crystal clear, winter's sky with a light breeze and warm sunshine. The day's events included the 100 meters, 200 meters and 800 meters, discus, shot put, javelin (vortex throw for the younger years) and long jump.
It was great to see all the students decked out in their house colours and cheering on their friends. As usual, the competition was very tight, with age championship positions changing hands throughout the course of the events. The official results of the carnival will be announced on Monday during the Primary and Secondary assemblies. A big thank you must be expressed to all the staff who worked hard to make the day a success and a special mention for Miss Chanel Fletcher who worked tirelessly to coordinate her first carnival as sports coordinator. Congratulations to all who participated and good luck in the HIA later in the term.

Year 7 Debating - Junior B Division Runners-up for 2021 by Zoe Close (Journalism Club)
On Wednesday this week, TMC's Year 7 debaters Ava Byrnes, Scarlett Thomson and Harmony Corden competed at Summerset College in the Tier 2 Finals of the Gold Coast Debating Competition. On the night, the team competed against Aquinas College to debate whether “Junk Food Should be Banned”. Adopting the affirmative position they were able to take out the win in a hard fought debate. With 5 wins out of 6 rounds of competition, the girls were awarded the Junior B Division Runners-up for 2021. Afterwards the girls were asked what it was like to compete in the 2021 competition.
“It was difficult to stand up against a crowd but we helped each other and were able to gain more confidence standing up.” - Ava Byrnes
“Teamwork helped get us through. Everyone was helpful with finding words in the dictionary and we would each help our other teammates.”- Harmony Corden
“I really enjoyed it since it has become more advanced compared to previous years and I enjoyed working with the team. Best part was the rebuttal.” -Scarlett Thomson
We would like to once again congratulate our debaters and can’t wait to see what their future debating careers hold in stall.

Mooting Competition - Griffith University, By Portia Ilaoa (Journalism Club)
On Wednesday July 28, senior students from Year 12 attended the 2021 Griffith Mooting Competition. Mooting is a simulated court proceeding in which students are presented with realistic legal situations that must be argued. The event was presented by the Law Facility of Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus with guest speaker Professor Ross Martin QC. Professor Ross Martin is senior barrister and member of the Queen's Counsel. He has practiced law for many years and was even involved in notorious cases like the prosecution of Jayant Patel. Professor Martin provided a workshop in which he discussed common misconceptions regarding law and explained court processes that a barrister is involved in. To hear from such a seasoned professional was an incredible insight for all of us interested in pursuing a career in Law.
After the workshop, the Year 12's watched a live moot. The overall experience was extremely insightful for anyone considering a career in law, with the accounts of Professor Ross Martin being of particular interest. The competition and lecture will be held again next year and we would encourage any aspiring lawyers in senior grades, who wish to have a hands-on experience of what their degree might entail, to consider participating in next year’s event.

Prep Gardening with Mr Jamieson
School is officially in session at Tamborine Mountain College, and while the youngest students of the school are learning new skills in the classroom, there are a few other tried and true skills we shouldn’t let fall by the wayside. Life skills, no matter how old they may seem are worth learning, and we had the wonderful experience of gardening with Mr. J.
On Friday the 23rd of July Mr. J taught the ‘Prep Val’ students the basic skills of gardening, how to care for plants and life cycles. We even had the chance to pick fruit and vegetables, the best part we got to eat them. We had the opportunity to hold worms and the expressions on our faces were of excitement, wonder and even the occasional look of fear at holding a wriggly worm.
The students discovered that gardening is not only great for developing skills such as fine-motor coordination and concentration, but adds value as “real work” projects to complete. Our real-world project of gardening will be ongoing with students caring for our garden throughout the year.

Readathon 2021
The 2021 Readathon begins next week (Sunday 1st August onwards) and we are participating in this great cause once again as a school. Last year we were in the top 3 highest fundraising schools in Queensland and it would be fantastic if we can match and maybe even better that effort this year.
We encourage all students across the primary school to read as much as they can throughout August and get sponsored/fundraise to help raise money for families affected by multiple sclerosis. The students can also record/log the books they have read on their profile page, as well as reach milestones and earn badges etc. Prizes will also be awarded to the classes and students who read the most books and raise the most amount of money. While stocks last, students also receive a free t-shirt when they register. Please use the following link to sign your child/ren up to the Tamborine Mountain College School school page and then join your year level page (your teacher may have already sent the link to you to do this):
Thank you for your support for this great cause and please do not hesitate to contact your teacher if you have any questions. Happy reading!

Year 4 excursion
The year 4 students had a science excursion this week that was a great deal of fun. The excursion was an introduction into our Science unit which is about life cycles and animal habitats.
We had a small hiccup on the way to our original venue (it was closed) and a quick-thinking Mr Stevens suggested the Botanical Gardens in Bundall. This turned out to be a great suggestion and our class all had a wonderful time.
The class got to have a walk around the venue examining different types of plants, guessing what animals we might find there and of course posing for pictures. The children also got to explore a bamboo cave that was situated in the gardens, as well as play a game of footy and use the adventure playground. The highlight of the day was definitely helping some ducks escape from a swarm of eels who tried to attack the raft of ducks. We did talk about how this was part of the life cycle but we were determined that those ducks were going to survive at least one more day!

Term 3 Week 2
Welcome back to the ELC for Term 3, and to our new families that have joined our community, we are delighted to have you and your child here as they embark on their learning journey with us at Tamborine Mountain College.
Thank you families for adhering to Covid-19 restrictions by wearing a mask while dropping off and collecting your child. This will continue next week and we will monitor the situation. Staff will check in/out the children for you in the morning and afternoon.
Pre Prep News
‘Ahoy me Hearties,’ some pirates have taken up residence at the ELC this term following on from an interest in creating treasure maps. Arriving at the centre, Pre Prep noticed a deserted island had popped up to role play a Pirates life. Embedding indigenous perspectives discussions have occurred around what sorts of bush foods would Pirates look for if the island was Australia. The learning continues when children:
Count to 6 to see if the correct amount of friends allowed are in the role play area at any one time.
Who’s turn is it to wear one of the Pirate hats?
Develop their literacy skills during comprehension discussions retelling parts of a Pirate story, making connections with different texts.
Used one:one counting to establish how many pieces of treasure were found in the sand trough, could a pattern be created with the two different types of treasure jewels.
In other news, Pre Prep began exploring, "What happens at the Olympics?"
We learned what are some of the countries and events that occur during the games, and how we can develop a team spirit. We had some enthusiastic competitors taking part in a series of races. Since TMC has green and gold in our uniform we decided we were team Australia!
Kindy News
Welcome to our new friends that have joined us this term. We have been getting to know each other playing lots of games to develop friendships and settle in. The children have been enjoying group art and sensory play with bubble blow painting their favourite!
This week we have focussed on Olympic themed activities and holding a mini Olympics of our own.
OSHC News
Vacation Care was a great success, thank you to the wonderful Educators that provided the children with a variety of experiences. Christmas in July Winter wonderland was amazing and a favourite of the students and families.
This week the OSHC children enjoyed a ninja slackline set up in the Pre Prep yard. The line had a number of challenging obstacles and the children tested their skills, using upper body strength to navigate the tough course.
Rest time
With a mixture of sleep needs currently, and being mindful that children will not have sleep when they move to Prep, we have reflected on our restime practices. If your child chooses or we know they like to have a sleep, we will have a bed available in the kindy room with an Educator. Please still provide sleeping provisions. However if your child does not need sleep they will only need a small cushion and will rest while listening to relaxing music for a short time.
Focus quiet activities will then resume before the show and share time, finishing with a story or game to complete the day.
Show and Share
If your child is still keen to share an item with clues this is still welcome as per roster.
‘Everywhere Bear’ is a story written by Julia Donaldson that we have introduced to the children promoting literacy and links to family and community. We would love you to read the story with your child, take photos of Pre Prep Bear taking part in family life and visiting locations around your community. Please write a little story with your child, print it off and return the following week for your child to share. This will then be added to a book we are creating.
Save the Dates:
Under 8’s Day - August 13
We will be asking for your assistance to be a parent helper to take your child around the event. I will send out a notice asking for help next week.
Book Week Dress Up
Week 6 - 22 August - 27 August
We are yet to nominate a day but it will be over this week so have fun creating a costume from your child’s favourite book.
Theme: Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds
Please remember to notify the centre if your child is away and the reason for their absence so we can add any sickness to our registry. If you do a Covid test, let us know of your result please. Thank you.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs Fernandez and the ELC team

French Speaking Competition By Portia Ilaoa (Journalism Club)
On the Sunday 25th of July, French students from TMC competed in the Griffith University French Speaking Competition. The students, from grades across the high school, were required to prepare and present a speech in French to a panel of judges. These judges then asked questions of each student in French and scored the students based on their overall performance. Whilst TMC’s students did not place in this year’s competition they are to be commended for their efforts and for representing the College with such pride.
Congratulations to the following students for participating:
Year 7
Scarlett Thomson
Sophia de Freitas
Year 9
Lily Parker
Year 12
Naomi Clements
Portia Ilaoa
It’s incredible how much effort all of these students have put into their French studies and hopefully we’ll see even more competing in next year's competition!
