We TMC urge parents to be aware of the dangers of children using W App, a mobile phone app that targets children, encouraging them to share their school name, age and phone number and to respond to anonymous polls. Designed to be fun and engaging to lure children in, the app presents some major safety issues.

W App (also known as Slay outside Australia) is a social media app for young people that lets you create a profile and interact with friends from your school by semi-anonymously posting and answering positive polls. When you sign up, you are asked for your full name and age and prompted to find your school by sharing your location, phone number and contacts list. The sign-up process does not guarantee that adults will be prevented from joining and it involves sharing personal information with Slay GmbH, the creators of the app.

When you sign up you are prompted to create and answer positive polls that pose a complimentary question, such as ‘Who has the best playlist?’, and then list four friends as answers to each poll. You can see the gender and school class of someone who compliments you, but not their name. You can also add Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok accounts to your profile, meaning there is the potential to link lots of personal information to your profile. You can also send ‘anonymous’ voice messages to your friends. The app is free to use, but by paying a subscription you can see who compliments you.

Gold Coast Health will be accepting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for their upcoming traineeship program commencing in October.

Students from years 10 and 11 who are invited to participate in this program will have an opportunity to complete a 12-month traineeship with the Gold Coast’s largest employer. They will be able to select from four opportunities across the health service and receive support from all of the wonderful staff, as well as high-end training from selected RTO's.  

Traineeships will be available in the following areas:

• Allied Health: Allied Health trainee’s will learn to support clinical staff across a wide range of professionals such as Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology Dietetics, Rehabilitation and more. 
• Operational: Operational Support Services (OSS) supports the delivery of non-clinical services within the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS) under the departments of Facilities and Security Operations, OSS Business Operations, and Environmental Services. As an Operational Support Officer trainee, you will support the health service in roles such as Logistics, Dock, Patient Handling, and Clinical Equipment transport. 
•  Administrative: The administration division supports a wide range of clinical and non-clinical services across the GCHHS. Opportunities include executive and team support officers, ward reception, general reception, IT support, human resources support, finance support, mailroom, switchboard phone rooms, and more. 
• Dental: Working as part of the dental team, trainee dental assistants observe and learn to provide efficient, high quality dental assistance to eligible patients and instrument reprocessing services within Oral Health facilities across the GCHHS.

Mr Jamieson visited 2 VIC this week to share a picture book during fruit break time. It was lovely to have him visit, the children thoroughly enjoyed his expressions and the story. We'd love to have him visit again soon!

Last Friday Year 2 used different shaped leaves the students collected to create characters and animals. The students were very creative with their artworks as they used PVA glue and googly eyes to bring their characters/animals to life. They used markers to draw some arms and legs on some of their characters/animals. We will continue to work on this art piece and add backgrounds over the next few weeks.

This week Year 4 has celebrated the globally beloved sport of Soccer (aka Football). We discussd how Soccer can be a powerful force in driving community and culture. This is because Soccer is a game that brings people together as a team in pursuit of a common goal! Soccer facilitates inclusion, teaching the values of mutual respect, acceptance, and cooperation, which are essential skills that we need on and off the field.

We are especially proud of the Matildas and the amazing team spirit they have shown in World Cup. We hope that they have an awesome game against Canada, no matter if they win or lose!

Now in its 21st year, the annual ACMF National Songwriting Competition, a free nationwide initiative, is designed to encourage creativity and self-expression through songwriting. With over $20,000 worth of prizes, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Entries close 30 September 2023.

This week in Art Excellence, Mr J taught students how to Paint Pour - Pour or Flip! Paint Pouring will be one of the free activities offered at ArtsFest this year.

Last Wednesday we had 25 students travel to The Kooralbyn International School to compete at HIA Athletics. Most students competed in multiple events and some were last-minute inclusions to replace those who were absent or sick. We have dome great personal achievements such as Michael L in Yr 11 throwing the discus so far that they ran out of tape plus Annie P placing 2nd in two events after being a last-minute inclusion in the team. However, it was a massive team effort that resulted in TMC winning the carnival by just 9 points. Congratulations to all involved.

District Athletics is coming up in Week 4 hosted at Somerset College. It is a 2-day event (Monday 31st July, Tuesday 1st August) with some students required both days but not all. In order to make districts we take the student's times and distances from our TMC Athletics carnival and compare them to the regional qualifying distances. This year we have 41 students from Ages 10 to 18 qualify for districts with most in multiple events. Those selected have been sent an email with their nominations plus an email home has been sent with very important information. So please read through the email if your child has been selected and reply to confirm the details and secure their spot.

Over the school holidays, we had Ashlee L (Year 10), Lachlan L (Year 7), and Chanel R (Year 12) compete at the Interschool Equestrian State Championships. 

To make the QLD state team you need to place top 4 to compete at Nationals.  Ashlee was the reserve champion in the 1* class on her horse Monty & also placed 4th overall in the EvA95 class on her horse Spike which means she has two spots on the QLD state team!! An outstanding achievement by a young athlete. Ashlee's hard work, passion, and determination are undeniable and inspiring to those around her. This achievement is a credit to that and it is exciting to continue to watch her growth and development.

Congratulations Ashlee and we wish you the best of luck when competing at Interschool Equestrian Nationals during the next school holidays.
