On Tuesday, Year 2 headed off the mountain to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
We enjoyed a spectacular Flight Show seeing a Pelican, Wedge tailed eagle, Barking owl, Barn owl, Kites, Black Cockatoos, Chickens (yes!) and Macaws.
Our two classes had a special education session with Kaz who talked about the impact of rubbish on our wildlife and what we can do to help. The session finished off with feeding the freshwater turtles and counting how many turtles we could observe for the keepers' daily checks.
The children had a great time seeing a range of native Australian animals and catching a train ride. It was a wonderful experience tying our Science unit; Earth's resources and sustainability and next term's Australian Animal Reports English unit.
A big thank you to our amazing volunteers for helping to make the excursion possible and to Mr Shier for all of his help too!

Year 4 had an amazing Eco Warrior join our class last Friday afternoon. His name was Rory and he works as a Herpetologist (frog expert) at Melbourne Zoo. All of the students asked him excellent questions about frogs from South East Queensland and around Australia. We learnt that frogs play an important role in science because they are 'environmental indicators' that help us measure the health of our ecosystems. This means that if scientists count lots of frogs in an area, then the ecosystem of that area must be really healthy. But if scientists don't count many frogs in an area then the ecosystem must be struggling. Wow! Frogs must be super important members of the food chain for the ecosystem to depend on them so much. Do you have lots of frogs living near you?
Well done Year 4 and thank you for visiting us Rory! It was un-frog-gettable!

Each year we like to do something special with Year 4 Band. This year students are learning two simple, well known songs - Hot Cross Buns and Jingle Bells - that have been arranged with a quasi-EDM backing track (which the students love), and we can't wait to perform it in Term 4! Students were also invited to experiment with creating their own melodies. I have collected recordings of these melodies and we are aiming to combine them to create our own piece.
This term was the first time our Yr 4 students combined to form the Year 4 Band. They are learning that a song might be easy to play on your own, but it is much harder to make it sound right when 30 other people are playing with you! Students are learning valuable ensemble skills like watching the conductor for entries, counting rests to come in at the right time, as well as balancing and blending their sounds.

At ArtsFest our Junior and Senior Bands will combine to perform a rendition of Deep Purple's iconic "Smoke on the Water." Ian Gillan (lead singer of Deep Purple) is a friend of our wonderful College receptionist, Ms Julie Davies, and has requested a video of our performance. With 5 bass guitars belting out that well-known riff, we are looking forward to making some noise!

Maya, Year 11, just finished her daytime appropriation of Starry Night. A beautiful painting!
