The last day of term was celebrated with a student vs teacher cricket match held on the oval at lunchtime. The students fielded a very strong team led by Jordan B and were too strong for the teachers, winning by one run. Lots of fun was had by all with students from year 5 and up participating, it was a great way to finish off another very busy term.

Farewell Ms V
I started working with Ms V when I joined the college in 2020. Since then, Mr Holm, Ms V and I have been a teaching team (the dream team!) in Year 6. Together, we have worked through many challenges, and celebrated many precious moments.
Mr Holm and I were so lucky to have Ms V's support through the challenges of the pandemic. She ran online reading classes throughout lockdown, and was a much-needed 'voice of reason' through unchartered territory!
Personally, I have worked with Ms V as a part of the Primary Musical Production team, and watched in awe as she transformed students into lions, tin men, witches, monkeys, fish, puppets, and munchkins! She is an extraordinary artist and costume designer - thank you for making our musicals magical, Ms V!
Ms V has been a source of support for students in our classes - academically and emotionally. We will all miss her care and concern. She just has a way of knowing when someone needs some 'time out', a gentle chat, or a hug.
Thank you for being you, Ms V! We wish you all the best for your future adventures. You have a lot of love to share, and we are so grateful to have received that love over many years at the college. We will miss you.

Opti-MINDs Begins Week 1 of Term 3!
Thank you to the students who have registered their interest in the Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge. The teachers involved will be drafting TMC teams over the semester break. We will meet with participants in the first week of term to officially invite students to compete, and finalise team composition.
If you haven't yet registered your interest, it's not too late! In case you haven't heard about it, the Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge is an inclusive team challenge which empowers participants to think, create & communicate. Opti-MINDS is a creative problem solving event for teams of participants from Preschool to Year 12 within three divisions.
Teams are required to collaboratively devise, prepare and present a solution (an entertaining 10 minute play) to an open-ended challenge from one of four categories - Language Literature, Science Engineering, Media Communication, Social Sciences. Completing the challenge requires the team to harness the vast and varied talents of each team member in order to create their own original response to the challenge.
Last year TMC entered five teams into the Opti-MINDs Challenge achieving great success with our Division III Social Sciences and our Division II Science Engineering teams placing first and second respectively in the state final - an AMAZING achievement. This year our goal is to enter 12 teams - one team per category, per division.
We look forward to the release of the six week challenge scenarios. We ask that all students and teachers involved meet in MK4 (Mr Horn's room) on Tuesday 12th July at morning tea time. We will share the challenge scenarios and discuss our rehearsal schedule then.

An Education in Senior Schooling
Ms Black and Mrs Parker-Browne met with year 9 on Tuesday afternoon to start discussing their senior schooling and vocational training options for 2023. Students learnt what a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is and that they need 20 points to achieve it, and started discussing ATAR and choosing pathways. Early in term 3 Tafe Queensland will come out to give students further information on the Tafe at School options that are available for all year 10 to 12 students as enrolment for 2023 will open in late August. Year 9 students are all very excited about their options for next year and are very keen for more information.

Year 6 Marine Biology Trip to Cairns
2022's Year 6 cohort was the first since 2019 to go on a week-long camp. In previous years, Year 6 students have spent time in Sydney and Canberra - a trip that many parents probably completed when we were school students ourselves. One of the positive outcomes of the pandemic was it forced a rethink about this trip and we identified that a learning experience based upon science and the environment would better prepare our students for the challenges ahead in Year 7 and beyond.
And snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef is much more fun than Canberra - sorry, but it's true.
On Monday June 6, 44 students and four staff flew from Brisbane to Cairns for a week of learning and adventure. The first stop was Cairns Zoom and Wildlife Dome where we learnt about some of the local reptilian creatures of Northern Queensland. Then it was time for the high ropes course and a walk around the zoo.
On Tuesday and Thursday the Year 6 students split into two groups, with one group heading to Fitzroy Island and the other sailing out to Moore Reef.
At Fitzroy Island we visited the turtle rehabilitation center to meet the volunteers looking after sick and injured turtles. Since they started about ten years ago, they have rescued, cared for and released back into the wild hundreds upon hundreds of turtles. We then enjoyed some fish feeding, a glass bottom boat ride and spent time snorkeling above pristine corals at Shark Fin Bay (named after a large rock on the beach shaped like a shark's fin). Finally, we enjoyed a presentation by a marine biologist who is working on restocking areas of coral that have been affected by coral bleaching. They are doing an amazing job, growing new, stronger, healthy coral in their underwater 'nurseries'.
The Moore Reef experience was amazing. It took two hours to reach the reef on a fast boat - it really felt like we were on a big adventure. At the reef there is a permanent pontoon, about the size of two basketball courts. They had everything we needed for an incredible day of snorkeling on the reef, including a guided snorkeling tour with a marine biologist, a glass bottom boat ride and a 30m water slide! We swam with so many different kinds of fish and even a few turtles!
On Wednesday we traveled on the famous Kuranda Train to Barron Falls and into the rainforest. We were treated to a ride on an Army 'Duck' built during World War II, an indigenous dance performance, boomerang throwing and a spear throwing display.
On Friday, we headed to the Cairns Aquarium and impressed our guide with the knowledge we had picked up during the week. After a small delay on our return flight, we were safety back home again on Friday night.
Thank you to the 44 students for their outstanding involvement and enthusiasm, and to Mr Holm, Mrs Horm and Ms Visser for their support of everyone involved.

Year 2 Historians
We recently went on our very own TMC expedition, discovering and exploring our schools' history. We identified what artefacts are and how they are helpful in understanding our past. We examined and discussed various points of significance, as we discussed sources that are a part of our school (plaques, ariel photographs and our TMC time capsule) and how it has changed over the years. We were lucky enough to have our TMC expects Mrs Melbourne and Mr Stevens to share their knowledge and perspectives with us.

Year 2 Jacob's Well Excursion
As part of our science studies, we recently visited Jacob's Well Environmental Education. What a wonderful day it was! Our children had endless opportunities to investigate, explore and discover the pond and forest. We viewed possums and sugar gliders in habitat boxes using a special camera. We met Bluey the blue-tongued lizard, Argo the carpet python and Lucky the turtle. This experience contextualised, fostered and extended our understanding, not only of living and non-living - but of the world around us. A truly hands-on experience, that was enjoyed by everyone.
A big thank you to the JWEEC team, our parent helpers and wonderful teacher aides.

Primary Debating
It was a BIG ASK to perform debates in the final week of term, but we managed to get the job done! After a week away in Cairns, some of our Year 6 debaters were unable to participate. Thankfully, Ava K, Jack A and Cassi B generously offered their time and support so that we didn't have to forfeit.
Our teams tackled the topic, "Noisy classrooms are good for learning." We presented convincing cases on both sides of the argument. With wins for our affirmative AND negative teams this round, our record is 5 victories out of 6 debates! The competition is very high quality this year, and all debaters should be proud of their success thus far.
Congratulations to Riley B, Ariana S and Skye P of the affirmative team. Congratulations also to Jack A (our superstar 'fill-in' who had just one day to prepare!), James H and Jasmine S of the negative team.
Special thanks to Ava K (chairperson) and Cassi B (timekeeper). The debate wouldn't have happened without you!
We all look forward to wrapping up a successful season with Round 4 debates to be held in week three of next term.

Year 4 Olympics
On Thursday, Year 4 participated in a mini-Olympic Games. We competed in true-Aussie events like 'Galah Gliding', 'Thong Throwing', 'Wombat Walking', 'Kangaroo Hopping' and 'Croc Jumping'. Hilarity ensued!
Our favourite part was watching Mr Hall demonstrate the events (his wombat walk was especially entertaining).
Congratulations Year 4! You are on your way to great things!

The PLC is Going to be Called...
The Primary Learning Centre (PLC) will be renamed at the start of 2023. First opened in 2015, the PLC was our first building on the Primary campus and four classrooms were built inside the original house on the block. In 2017, two new buildings were opened, and so started a new tradition of naming our Primary learning spaces after local native animals.
As part of the College's commitment to enhancing our connection to the indigenous peoples of Australia, all building names will also proudly display the traditional Yugambeh word for the animals.
The Primary students voted on their favourite animal to rename the PLC. The choices were:
Bandicoot (Yagoi)
Eagle (Mibunn)
Wallaby (Wongari)
This was a 'kids only' vote - no teachers had any input at all. And the winning animal was...
EAGLE!!!
