Opti-MINDs Is Coming
The Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge is an inclusive team challenge which empowers participants to think, create & communicate. Opti-MINDS is a creative problem solving event for teams of participants from Preschool to Year 12 within three divisions.
Teams are required to collaboratively devise, prepare and present a solution to an open-ended challenge from one of four categories - Language Literature, Science Engineering, Media Communication, Social Sciences. Completing the challenge requires the team to harness the vast and varied talents of each team member in order to create their own original response to the challenge.
Participation in the Opti-MINDs challenge gives ALL students the opportunity to utilise their unique skill set and develop their creative and collaborative potential. Opti-MINDs encourages students to think outside the box and embrace new ideas and ways of thinking.
Last year TMC entered five teams into the Opti-MINDs Challenge achieving great success with our Division III Social Sciences and our Division II Science Engineering teams placing first and second respectively in the state final - an AMAZING achievement. This year our goal is to enter 12 teams - one team per category, per division.
The Opti-MINDs Creative Sustainability Challenge officially opens at the beginning of Term Three with the release of the six week challenge scenarios. Students are encouraged to register their interest to participate in Opti-MINDs 2022, by attending lunchtime ‘warm up’ sessions starting Monday next week (23/5) with Mr Horn for secondary and Thursday (26/5) with Mrs Horn for primary.

STEM Ambassador's Conference
On 5th May, four students from the STEM Club, Chloe Crawford, Ethan Hodder, Tia Hodder and Layth Johnston, were nominated to attend Griffith University's annual STEM Ambassador's Conference. Students travelled to Parliament House to participate in the conference. During the day, students were required to participate in a workshop about entrepreneurial thinking and designed an 'iBin' which would encourage students to keep the school tidy. They then went on to brainstorm STEM activities for the STEM Club and for Science week later in the year. Finally, students walked from Parliament House to the Queensland Museum to have fun at SparkLab where they investigated a number of exhibits and build earthquake proof buildings. These students were awarded with STEM badges at assembly for their excellent effort and participation throughout the day as TMC's STEM Ambassadors for 2022.

Debating by Lily Parker Year 10
This week, TMC’s junior and senior debating teams participated in Round 3 of debating. The junior team, made up of Year 7 students Archie Antunovic and Allirah Hembling and Year 8 students Scarlett Thompson and Isaac Bailey had a topic of ‘Single Sex Schools Should Be Abolished’. They competed against Saint Stephen’s College and did an excellent job at convincing the audience that single sex schools are an archaic institution and do not reflect the needs of modern students. With this, they have secured the win for their third week in a row.
The senior team; Keane Diong, Annia Regi, Elijah Fern and Molly Smith of Year 11 and Year 12 student, Maddy Graham, competed against a highly experienced team from Saint Andrews, focusing on the topic ‘That Workers Should Continue To Be Paid Penalty Rates on Weekends’. Unfortunately, the team was unable to take the win for this round, however, we have no doubt that they gave it their best and will continue to do so, leading into the next round.
Amazing efforts from everyone involved and good luck for the next debates!

Our School participates in the Scholastic Book Club. Up to twice a term, catalogues containing a selection of books for all ages, are sent home with children. Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our classrooms. If you would like to access the catalogue on line please clink on this link
It is easy to order. The Book Club Loop platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/loop or by using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

Drama - Years 4, 5 & 6
Students have been enjoying lots of fun learning activities in Drama this term. In Year 6 our unit of Transfigured Fairy Tales have seen students exploring traditional fairy tales. Students have been working in small groups to rehearse and perform traditional fairy tales and this week we began to modernise these tales with lots of great ideas being developed.
Year 5 have been exploring Circus, Clowning and Comedy and enjoying making each other laugh. We have explored circus clowns from Cirque de Soliel as well as clowns such as Mr Bean. All students have bravely and creatively rehearsed and performed individually and in pairs which has been a lot of fun!
Year 4 have been exploring Aboriginal Dreaming and have worked in small groups to devise their own Dreaming stories which they have gone on to rehearse and perform with use of various props. Students have had a chance to use their imaginations and develop creativity, characters and confidence through dramatic processes.
I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching Drama for these past five weeks and look forward to seeing students continued development and growth in this subject.
