Two teams represented TMC at the Opti-MINDS state finals last weekend. Both teams did a fantastic job and further refined their creative and problem solving skills. The Secondary school team took out 1st place with a very witty performance. While the Primary school team did not take out a place, their efforts were commendable and we are so proud of them all.

TMC Speaks Out - Public Speaking Competition
Over the last two weeks, students from Years 5 to 11 have competed at the AB Paterson Public Speaking Competition. This competition attracts the best school age public speakers from across the Gold Coast. Our public speaking team was made up of:
Year 5 - Faryn B, Lily A and Scarlett A
Year 6 - Riley B
Year 7 -, James H, Ariana S, Ruby T, Jack A and Eve S
Year 8 - Angel Rose W, Annabel V, and Archie A
Year 11 - Ethan H
The students were presented with a range of topics from "The Masks We Wear" and "Books; Food for the Mind" to "Ignorance is Bliss" and "Money makes the world go round". Our young orators had to find their own avenue into the topic and create a speech that was engaging, informative or persuasive. However, being a public speaking comp, they also had to work hard on their delivery, memorising their speech, perfecting their pace and timing and developing an engaging rapport with the audience. All of our students performed excellently and made our College family proud. However, Both Ariana and Angel-Rose were both ranked in the top two in their individual heats and successfully made it through to the finals.
Angel-Rose was passionate and empathetic as she guided her audience towards the importance of seeing beyond ignorance and engaging with the beauty and wonder of our world. Ariana gave an engaging, pun-filled and humorous examination of the age old question "What ever happened to my socks?". Both students spoke beautifully and in the end Ariana was successful in achieving 3rd place in the Year 7 competition
Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year's event.

Day for Daniel & Child Safety Awareness
Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day is Day for Daniel held on Friday 27 October, 2023.
Held annually on the last Friday of October, Day for Daniel honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe. We ask all TMC students and staff on this special day to wear red to promote the child safety message.
At TMC, students have access to our Child Protection Handbook via Student Cafe. This information can also be accessed via Parent Lounge.
Parents, carers, and educators are encouraged to start a conversation with children and young people about personal safety. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation website has an excellent range of age-specific resources for parents to use to initiate these important conversations.

Touch Football - Years 5 & 6
On Wednesday, 21 Year 5 and 6 students headed off to Owen Park, Southport to play in the King's Christian College Touch Football Tournament.
For many of our students this was their first time playing competitive Touch Football; add in playing on a full size field, against schools who have Touch Football Excellence programs and having to back up and play an additional three-five games; the day was a great learning experience.
All of our students represented TMC with pride, giving their all throughout games and helping their teammates to achieve their desired goals. Our boys team drew quite a difficult pool, winning two games, losing two as well as one draw. Our girls team won all bar one of their pool games and only just missed out on semi-finals.
I commend all of our students on their effort, especially having to play long minutes with limited subs whilst being fatigued and carrying a few injuries.
A big thank you also goes to a large number of our student's parents, who attended and showed their support throughout the day.

onto the chaotic streets

There once was a goat from Fiji
who was a little bit cheeky
he ate a poor goat

Prep - Our Budding Artists
It's been a busy start to the term for Prep! We have been working hard on some artwork - using new skills, techniques and materials. The children have explored materials such as; oil pastels, watercolours and various collage materials with different textures. We have had lots of fun learning how to use the lightbox to trace images. There will be many more fun and creative art activities to finish off the term.
We hope you have a great weekend.

Year 4 Sleepover
Last Friday, the Year 4 students had their much anticipated Year 4 Sleepover at the college which helped students strengthen and form new friendships as well as participate in some fun activities throughout the evening.
As the school day ended, the students transitioned into extra fun-mode and had a wonderful time creating pillowcase keepsakes and fun masks, they had a picnic dinner surrounded by lanterns and fluffy blankets as the sun went down, danced until they dropped in the neon "disco room", played some fun games in the Year 4 classrooms, and finally ended the night with a movie.
The following morning, the students showed amazing resilience by getting up bright and early, after not much sleep thanks to exciting late night chatter! They independently packed up their belongings, set up the classrooms ready for Monday and then went outside to play some games before being picked up for their busy weekends ahead.
It was a wonderful experience for the students and teachers alike as we all spent time together in a more relaxed setting, and new friendships were definitely forged. It was lovely to see the bond strengthen further across the cohort and for the group to start the beginning of the end of Year 4- almost ready for Year 5 next year!

Year 2 Hands on With Maths
This week 2 VIC and 2 VAL learnt about capacity in Maths and had a wonderful time using water to measure how much something could hold. They explored how the same capacity can sometimes look different depending on the shape of the container and did a fantastic job of estimating before they measured.
