Unfortunately Channel 9 has postponed our weatherman visit for this coming Monday. Hopefully we will be able to arrange another visit soon.
Starting this week, the SRC, along with the help of Year 11 student Charlotte F have begun an “Adopt a Grand-Parent Drive” to collect presents to take to the citizens at the retirement home. The main idea of this is to ensure those who may not have any family feel remembered, by bringing presents to take to them in time for Father’s Day. The sorts of items that are welcomed are shortbread biscuits, socks and any other general presents such as teddies and stuffed animals. We thank anyone who brings in items for the Grand-Parent Drive and are sure that the Grand-Parents will be extremely grateful.
A big thank you to our P & F parents, Year 10 volunteers students and Loretta Mineo who did a great job getting the Lions ready for our Year 12 Graduation.

We have washed off the mud and caught up on sleep, so it is time to share our Year 9 camp experience with our school community.
Emu Gully Adventure Education is at Helidon Spa and is a purpose-built camp that aims to shape great Australians. Our Year 9 students were inspired by ANZAC stories of courage, mateship, and resilience, and took these skills to every activity. The students not only looked after each other with unwavering dedication and kindness, but they welcomed us teachers into the fold of mateship and teamwork, as they faced every obstacle that came at them. They picked each other (and us!) up after every fall, they cheered each other's name in encouragement and showed phenomenal leadership and humility. The Year 9 students were wonderful representatives for their families, our College, and themselves. The camp was not easy, though when we were reflecting as a group - students and staff together - around the campfire on Thursday night, we agreed that it was worth it.
Well done Year 9!

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2021, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.
Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2022.
For more information, visit www.qld.gov.au/nextstep/ or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.
To celebrate the close of science week, students participated in a ‘Brain Break’ morning tea. Students entered the room and viewed some optical illusions. They finished their morning tea with a round of science trivia. Thanks to the SRC members for their help.

The Book Fair held next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is like having a bookstore at school! We will set up our Book Fair in the 'Old Admin Building', which is up the stairs on the far end of our College Admin.
On Tuesday, the children in Primary will tour the Book Fair and write their 'wish list'.
On Tuesday afternoon from 2:30pm until 3:15pm, the Book Fair will open for the first time for parents to visit and purchase books. The Book Fair will also open on Wednesday and Thursday - 8:15am-8:50am in the morning and 2:30pm-3:15pm in the afternoon. Credit card transactions can be processed easily at the fair, but it will be a cashless shop.
Parents can also pay online https://parentpayments.scholas... You must fill in the back of the 'wish list' card, including the receipt number and return it to school, where we can hand over your new books!
There is also a colourful pamphlet coming home today in your child's bag that has the same wish list you can use.
Every purchase of books from the Book Fair and Book Club earn Scholastic credits which the College is able to then use to purchase literacy resources to use at school.
Thank you to everyone who buys a book and the volunteers helping out at the stall.
The Year 5's had the most exciting surprise last week. This entire term they have been looking for powerful owls in the rainforests surrounding Tamborine Mountain. They looked for whitewash, owl pellets, suitable trees, feathers and any sign of suitable prey animals for the owl. Unfortunately, all their hard work has not yet lead to an owl sighting. So the students were super excited when Mark Cullen (Birds of Prey Show, O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat) showed us Agatha, a one year old female powerful owl! And although she was the highlight of the show, the students also came face to face with some amazing other raptors, like the kestrel, peregrine falcon, barking owl, barn owl and goshawk.

Such exciting learning is happening in the year 2 classes! We started our dance unit and our science unit this week. In science we are learning all about forces that can push and pull us. Of course this week is Science Week and this gave us an excellent opportunity to explore the school grounds and just like real scientists, examine our playground and describe which forces we can see in action! Just look at these future engineers!!

This week in Year 3 Mathematics, we were learning about Area. The children explored finding the area of different surfaces using standard units of measurement. They compared how different measurement tools produced varying results due to the surface area of their measurement tools.
These photos are from our second day of investigating tools of measurement and comparing results.

As we have been learning about the Sun, Earth and moon in Year 3 science. Today we completed a fun science experiment playing around with snowflake patterns and the Sun's rays. The students predicted what would happen when they used a light source to reflect off a mirrored surface with snowflake patterns on top. We had fun making snowflakes and taping them to the discs before trying the experiment with a torch in a dark classroom and then going outside into the sunshine. The students discovered they could make rainbows patterns onto dark or shadowed objects like the brick wall or the shadowed grass. It was great to have a nice sunny day for this experiment!

This week, the Year 5 students worked together with the volunteers of Landcare to plant more than 60(!) trees. What a wonderful morning! The students were excited and worked hard to get all the plants into the ground to expand the natural habitat of the powerful owl. Landcare was amazing in doing all the prep work for us and supplying us with the land, plants, tools and expertise. A big thank you to Judith Roland from Landcare and Andrew Dinwoodie from The Powerful Owl Project for sharing their knowledge about plants, habitat and wildlife corridors with our students.
Mr Robert Schönherr
The Primary Musical cast and choir for Little Red Riding Hood are getting very excited for our fast approaching debut performance at Arts Fest on Saturday 3rd September. Please check costume requirements here for your child and bring in these items to school by Week 7 Monday 22nd August.
Please check the rehearsal schedule here and make sure your child is at all remaining rehearsals.

On Wednesday, two Year 5 and 6 teams headed off to The Kooralbyn International School to play in the HIA Primary Touch Football Competition. The two teams played two games each, versing not only Kooralbyn but also Hills College. From the combined four games our teams played, they managed to win three and narrowly lost their last game.
This was a great effort from our students as they had only begun training one week prior, with this being the first time many of them have played Touch Football.
Mr Bourke would like to not only thank the students and their effort and attitude on the day but also Miss Fletcher and Mrs Horn for their help throughout training and during the games.
We look forward to organising more competitions like this in the near future.
