Sausage Sizzle & Bake Sale - Monday 21 August
On 21st August, the SRC will be hosting a Sausage Sizzle and Bake Sale to raise money for our College's Book Room. All students are invited to bring along some money to buy themselves something from the barbecue and/or bake sale. This is a fantastic cause and we will be using any money we make to fund our College's new Book Room. We are also seeking donations of books that are in excellent condition to contribute towards our library. If you have any unwanted books that are suitable for the College, please bring these in and deliver them to MK3. Thank you for your support as always and we look forward to celebrating Book Week with our TMC students!

Year 5 - Birds of Prey Display
This term the Year 5 students have been deeply engaged in the exploration of plant and animal adaptations. An exciting and educational opportunity unfolded last Friday when Mark Cullen graced us with his presence, accompanied by his captivating birds of prey. This special encounter allowed our students to witness firsthand the remarkable adaptations present in raptors. The assortment of raptors on display was truly impressive. Among them were a brown falcon, a kestrel, a barking owl, a barn owl, a powerful owl, and an awe-inspiring wedge-tailed eagle. Through this experience, our students were enlightened about various distinctive traits these birds possess, showcasing their evolution for survival.Delving into the intricacies of these adaptations, the students learned how the unique shapes of owl faces play a pivotal role in enhancing their auditory senses. Furthermore, they discovered the astounding strength contained within the talons of the powerful owl, capable of seizing any climbing mammal right out of a tree. Equally captivating was the insight into the wedge-tailed eagle's vision, enabling them to spot diminutive creatures on the ground even while soaring at considerable heights. A heartfelt expression of gratitude goes out to Mark Cullen for sharing his expertise and his magnificent birds of prey with us.

Year 6 - Science Visit
This term in Science, Year 6 have been learning about Electricity and Renewable and Non-renewable energy. We have been looking at series and parallel circuits, electrical safety, solar and wind power, conductors and insulators. On Thursday Year 6 had a visit from a qualified electrician Aaron Croker (Mrs Croker's husband) and their son Braydon who is in his second year apprenticeship. Aaron showed us a solar panel and taught us how they work and store energy from the sun. He showed us some photos of him installing solar panels in New South Wales and a wind turbine in Colorado, America.
We were lucky enough to have some hands on experiences with some electrical resources such as power points, cables, solar cables, circuits, switch boards and explored all the items kept in the safety rescue kit. We learnt how a switchboard works and controls all the circuits. We discovered there is a special tool to save somebody if they are being electrocuted. It is called a Crook. Because you can not touch somebody that is being electrocuted you place the rubber covered crook under their arm and pull them to safety. We had fun with this and even Mr J joined in.
Braydon spoke to us about what it is like to be an electrical apprentice and showed us how to strip cable to prepare it for wiring.
They shared some very important electrical safety advice too.
Thankyou for visiting Year 6 Aaron and Braydon. We had fun and we were able to share these experiences with our buddies from Japan.

Science Week Week 6
This week it is ‘National Science Week.’ The 2023 theme is: Innovation: Empowering Future industries. Pre-Prep had an exciting excursion to the science labs on Wednesday. Mrs. Smith, who coordinates science in the Secondary campus, greeted us sharing some safety instructions before we were able to enter the labs. Pre-Prep remembered to walk slowly as Mrs. Smith had mentioned the lab contained chemicals and dangerous objects.
Something that is different from other parts of the school and Pre-Prep is the personal protective wear that you need to wear in the lab. A lab coat to protect clothing, goggles to protect eyes and gloves to protect our hands.
Year 11 Chemistry students demonstrated their experiments they planned for us.
Elephant toothpaste! We watched this one with great interest because the name was so funny! As the student added different chemicals and ingredients very quickly, they reacted and we watched as it shot right up to the ceiling!!
We discovered how a volcano erupts, using two ingredients found in our cupboards Pre-Preps were able to use their prior knowledge to explain that they reacted causing them to erupt, flowing over the sides of the volcano.
Mrs. Smith showed us a Bunsen Burner. We learnt about how we can stay safe near fire especially since we have just practiced a ‘fire Drill’ at the ELC! Mrs. Smith sprayed different colours onto the flame to make the flame change colours. Pre-Prep were commended as they could communicate their knowledge of colours during this experiment.
Well done Pre prep, for showing great manners, and a big thank you to Year 11 and Mrs. Smith for giving up your time during National Science week so we can see what happens when you go to Big School and learn more about science.

Nestled in the heart of Burleigh Heads, David Fleay’s is a small wildlife park with a difference, that offers something for everyone..... and during August here is another incentive to visit!
Every child who comes to the park dressed up as their favourite book character will receive free admission when accompanied by a paying adult.
Reading provides many benefits from building concentration, improving memory, boosts critical thinking, and expands vocabulary to name just a few. Stories about Queensland's unique wildlife helps children understand and respect the natural environment and the wildlife within.
August is a great time to enjoy both the passion of reading while connecting with Queensland's national parks and wildlife!
