Featured Image of the Week - Busy Bees at TMC
A swarm of bees visited campus this week looking for a new home. The swarm descended upon the grevillea bush bee-hind the stage and quickly formed into two clusters. As we stood guard, ensuring the area was cordoned off, we witnessed the clusters quickly merge into one large cluster.
When bees swarm like this, it is because their hive has bee-come overcrowded and they have split into a new colony.
We are lucky to have an experienced bee keeper on staff and so Mr Marek was promptly called to rehome the bees. During the relocation process, the Head of Secondary, Mrs Stevens, and the Head of Primary, Mr Stevens, learned some fun facts. Did you know swarming bees can release aggressive pheromones that smell like bananas?
Mr Mareck used a purpose-built smoke machine to mask any lingering scent of the Queen bee on the grevillea to help redirect straggling bees into the new hive.
We are so lucky to have a campus where even the bees value our bee-uty.
