AB Paterson Public Speaking Competition
2021 sees the return of the AB Paterson Public Speaking Competition. This Competition is held for Years 4 through to 12 and brings together students from across the Gold Coast. Whilst the Year 12 competition was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid restrictions, it is great to say that the Year 4 competition went ahead this week without a hitch.
TMC students, Scarlett H and Riley B, took part in Thursday night's heats. The Year 4 competition is all about gaining experience with no winner named, as this is the first year that these students can compete. Scarlett chose the topic 'A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words' and talked about the importance of valuing the photos we take and not just pressing delete. Riley's topic was 'Imagine...' and he challenged the audience to imagine a world without bullying. Both students spoke exceptionally well and received valuable feedback from the judges that will only see them improve for next year.
The remaining Years 5 - 11 will compete next term in Week 2, so keep an eye out in the Lion's Roar for more great results.

Keenan (Year 3) Takes Action in the Community
Keenan (Year 3) saw an issue in our local area and decided to take action! Noticing a large amount of rubbish along Beacon Road, Keenan decided to do a rubbish pick up on Sunday morning to help the environment. He walked the length of Beacon Road with his bag and a rubbish claw. Keenan said next time he will bring two bags to make sure he can get every piece of rubbish.
We are so proud of Keenan! The world would be a better place if everyone took the time to act for their local community.

Driver Safety Continues to be Key for Seniors
Operational firefighters, Ben and Matthew from QLD Fire and Emergency Service Services, came to the College on Thursday to deliver a special presentation about driver safety. They explored the "Fatal 5" with a focus was on what happens in a car accident, how emergency services respond, and how widely road trauma can impact those involved. Students were able to appreciate it wasn't just direct families impacted by car accidents, but the emergency services and wider community also. This presentation was a timely reinforcement for their BRAKE program delivered last term in ARC. We hope students continue to consider the positive steps they can make as safe drivers on our roads, and we greatly appreciate the wonderful work of emergency services personnel in donating their time and experience.

Prep - Year 3 Sports Day
It was a beautiful day on Thursday to host our annual Prep - Year 3 Sports Day. This morning event is all about having a try and doing your best. It was wonderful that so many parents were able to come out and enjoy the morning of fun and games. While we do not award Age Champions at such a young age, we did keep a record of house points:
Walton House - 252 points
Nicholls House - 246 points
Kyle House - 243 points
What a close result in the end!
All the children deserve a pat on the back for a great morning of competition held in good spirits. A special shout out to Ms Fletcher for organising the event. It was also great to see one of the dads come dressed as a Nicholls Knight!
Saving Wild Homes - Art Competition by Emily Clarke Year 11
This year, the Queensland Conservation Council is running an art competition aimed at drawing attention to the need for Australia to conserve and protect the homes and habitats of native animals. Students needed to compose a drawing or painting of one of Queensland's wonderful and unique native animals in their natural environment.
Mrs Michelle Criss, one of TMC's fabulous Art teachers has entered the Art work of a number of our Year 3 students. The students, Keenan G, Scarlett A, Faryn B, Oliver H, Eden W, Joesphine S, Benji J and Britton P were all selected. When asked what it felt like to have their art entered and displayed in the competition all the students agreed that "It felt Cool!".
The competition will conclude on the 15th of October when the judges will announce winners and a public display will be created. All of TMC has their fingers crossed for our budding artists.
The Rubbish Detectives
Cassie (Year 5) had the idea to investigate where rubbish was an issue on the Primary grounds. She enlisted the support of two friends, Abby and Annalise, and they walked around the school grounds to record where they could find rubbish. They discovered that under the Primary bridge and under the deck were the two main areas of concern. Cassie, Abby and Annalise then reported back to the students during our assembly this week to encourage all students to clean up after themselves. Thank you girls for using your initiative to make TMC a cleaner environment.
Pinocchio by Lily Parker Year 9
During ArtsFest, the much anticipated and exciting Primary Musical ‘Pinocchio’ was finally performed. After more than two terms of costume and set preparation, rehearsals, learning lines and every part of the long, grueling process, all of the hard work finally paid off with a stunning performance!
After last year’s ‘Wizard of Oz’, this year’s musical had a hard act to follow. I asked the main cast of this performance [Lucas R - Pinocchio, Oliver D - Geppetto, Archie A - Cricket, James H - Puppet Master and Donkey Seller and Annabelle H - Blue Fairy] about their experiences with creating and performing this play and everyone agreed that those that had the opportunity to be a part of the performance, enjoyed it and that it was a success. Specifically, Annabelle H said she, “Loved getting to work with the cast”, while Oliver D elaborated by saying he enjoyed working with “people that he knows from past performances and working with new people in the school”. Finally, Archie A stated that he enjoyed “Watching the play come together!”.
Many of the cast members loved the opportunity that Pinocchio brought, as it meant that they were able to further their acting skills, work with others and show people what they were able to achieve in a short amount of time. Wonderful teachers, Mrs Addison, Mrs Horn, Ms Visser, Ms Jewel and Ms Criss, guided the students through the whole process of this play. Mrs Addison conducted the choir and handled all things to do with the music, Mrs Horn handled choreography and movement, Ms Jewel did musical accompaniment and Ms Visser handled costumes for the performance.
I asked Ms Criss what she liked about creating and performing Pinocchio. She shared that she liked “What the student’s enjoyed from the play, that they could make new friends and that they got to appreciate learning the main roles and elements of Drama.” She believes that they learnt good social skills and movement on stage in order to entertain an audience. All of the little unique touches made for an amazing atmosphere and overall performance.
A massive thank you to all other staff involved in the performance who worked so hard to make such a wonderful production come to life.
All in all, it is clear that this play was very enjoyable for not only the audience, but for the students and teachers involved, as they got to see it come together after so much effort and hard work. All of TMC is so proud of the final performance and a massive thank you must be made to all the staff and students involved in the performance who worked so hard to make such a wonderful production come to life.
Early Learning News
From the Early Learning Centre Director
Book Week
We all had a fun filled week celebrating this year's Book Week dressing up as our favourite characters. The visits from the Tamborine Mountain librarians were a highlight, arriving in costume the children were enthralled as they attentively listened to a ‘Pete the Cat’ story. Thank you families for supporting your child by bringing them to the centre in their costumes. Children are naturally curious and creative. When children develop a love for reading books at a young age, it will stay with them forever and open up a whole new world.
Artsfest
The children at the ELC were well represented at last week’s Artfest. Every student in Pre Prep had a piece of artwork on display and Kindy and OSHC children contributed working in their groups to collaborate on a group piece. We are very proud of our children's efforts as we have been working all year on their learning around ‘Our Acknowledgement of Country’ . The display is in our foyer, we will send the drawings home.
Athletic Carnival
In preparation for the Colleges Athletics carnival Pre prep took part early in the week participating in a series of races. The Egg and Spoon race was a real highlight! So much concentration went into balancing the fragile egg. On Thursday for the big event Preprep walked over to the sports oval to cheer on the school children and take part in a sprint race. Everyone received a ribbon for participating. Excellent work PrePrep!
Scarecrow Festival
In October we are going to enter an entry jointly with Prep into the local Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival. The theme will be the two characters from Julia Donaldson story ‘The Scarecrows Wedding.’
We would love your help in regards to some items the children could use to put this together.
Shells
Blue overalls
Check shirt
Red bandana

The Arts News
ArtsFest by Zoe Close Year 11
Well, that's a wrap! ArtsFest has once again shown us the wonderful creativeness of our TMC students. As described by Mrs Stevens and Mrs Melbourne, ArtsFest is about opening up the school to the school community, the wider community and surrounding areas in order to showcase and display the wonderful culture and artistic talents of our students, which has certainly seen great success.
Some of the things that were on offer included the viewing of the many artistic pieces by our talented students. These pieces of artwork included Year 8 Picasso faces, Year 9 Pop Art, Year 10 Surrealism paintings, including Mona Lisa paintings, Year 11 Appropriation artworks and Year 12 artwork. When asked about the artwork displays, Ms Radley, ArtsFest coordinator and Art teacher extraordinaire, commented that it took a whole day to hang up the art display, while also commenting on how her favourite moment of the day was seeing how awesome all of the art was.
There were also a number of performances on the day, including the Primary school who dazzled the audience with their incredible singing and acting skills in the musical ‘Pinocchio’. Mr Stevens commented on how the musical was, “One of the best musicals that had been performed, [with this year’s] having the most involvement by the choir, which helped drive the performance.” Mr Stevens also mentioned how his already high expectations were surpassed “All the students in the play had perfect sound and all the students remembered their lines.”
Both Mrs Stevens and Mrs Melbourne commented on how the event was a huge success and surpassed their expectations. With the rain clearing up and the wonderfully large turnout of people who were all engaged and showing off their artistic works, it was clear just hoe popular TMC’s ArtFest was. For Mrs Melbourne, the best part of the day was, "getting to see the crowds and visitors, as well as talking to families and new faces.” For Mrs Stevens, it was mentioning how she had many standout moments including, “watching the Primary and Drama Excellence performances, the many musical performances and Optiminds performance.”
With the 2021 ArtFest being such a great success, there is no doubt it will only get bigger and better next year. We can’t wait!
ArtsFest - African Drumming Workshop by Hayley Kach Year 11
One of the most exciting and dynamic events held at ArtsFest was the African Drumming Workshop. This was an opportunity for a whole bunch of students and parents (and one or two teachers) to get the chance to learn to play real African drums and engage with the rhythms of Africa.
The instructor was highly enthusiastic and encouraged the participants to not only drum, but also to jive to the music, which quickly had all in earshot tapping their feet and moving to the beat. Up to 16 participants at a time were able to create some amazing syncopated rhythms. Mr Michael Worton, one of the fantastic TMC teachers helping out at the workshop, stated that “[the event] was fun and engaging, with lots of giggling, lots of banging, lots of noise and a good upper body workout. Arms were aching, the kids were laughing and smiling and they were making heaps of noise.”
With it being such a great success and engaging event, we hope that we might see the return of the African Drumming Workshop and next year’s ArtFest.
Destination Asia - Lino Printing
The students of Year Six have been studying Asian culture in preparation for a special exhibit to be held next term. We are currently experimenting with media that allows us to mimic traditional Japanese art forms. Today, Mrs Radley invited us to her art room to begin carving lino tiles that we will use as our own version of woodblock printing! We wish to thank Mrs Radley for her time and guidance. Thank you to Ms Visser who is a talented artist also! Ms Visser helped us to learn how to use carving tools.
Watch this space - we can't wait to share our beautiful prints with you all!
Mrs Deborah Horn
Painting Workshop
Another of the wonderful experiences available on ArtsFest was the Painting Workshops. We would like to thank local Tamborine Mountain Artist, Tamara Armstrong, for joining us at ArtsFest!
Tamara, who is a Brisbane Portrait Prize finalist, ran a painting workshop utilising acrylic paints on board to capture designs and patterns within nature. Participants left the workshop with a bespoke piece of art, designed and painted by them and a sense of achievement in creating some truly original artworks.

Equestrian - Matt Ryan
During sport this week, our Equestrian students were coached by Matt Ryan, three times Olympic gold medalist. Matt won individual and the team medals at Barcelona 1992, and team gold at Sydney 2000.
Renown for his hard-working attitude and defensive riding technique this was an amazing opportunity for young riders to learn from a living legend.
Matt worked on rider position, approach lines, and accuracy with the girls which lays the foundation for all successful jumpers.
We hope to have Matt return on a regular basis to work with all the riders to help them reach their goals.
