Pirates and Going on a Bear Hunt….
Pre prep VIc have been interested in drawing their own maps (Pirate Treasure Maps that have x marks the spot) during free play. To extend on this interest we have had Pirate themed experiences and ‘Bear Hunt’ story walk to explore another kind of map! One of the experiences was to practise cutting around Pirate pictures that could be used on their maps. Cutting is regularly included in our program to enable children opportunities to develop their fine motor skills. The next day Mrs Fernandez read the story ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ and then encouraged the children to recall as many parts of the story they could remember. The children thought about all the different places that were in the story.
Charlie said, they went through the grass and a river. Emilia said, and they went through a snowstorm ! The children were very excited to then go on their very own ‘Bear Hunt’ adventure.
The children splashed through the river and squelched through the mud, following the sequence of the story !
Next they drew their own ‘Bear Hunt’ maps, putting into practice their best writing skills and knowledge of numerals numbering each area of their maps one through to five. During class we have been learning to recognise numerals and understand the concept of counting individual items.
This was such a fun day for the children to explore the outdoors as they took part in sensory activities.
Roll up, roll up to Kindy’s ice cream shop……..
Kindy friends helped set up a new role play area this week exploring the real life experience of going to an ice cream shop.
Mrs Hinkins had a very special box with items inside it, taking turns the children needed to guess what was inside the box. It was filled with a few ice-cream shop items that could be used in the shop. Previously everyone had the opportunity to contribute their ideas to brainstorm what you need in an ice cream shop? There were some very knowledgeable children in the group that seem to know all about this tasty treat!
Kindy is learning:
- How do you ask for what you would like when going to a shop?
- Roles in a shop, someone needs to take the money or be the customer.
- To take turns so it is fair for everyone, developing awareness of different ways to interact and communicate in particular social and cultural situations.
- To explore new vocabulary for describing what they see, hear, taste, smell, touch and feel.
- Different ways to be imaginative and creative in dramatic and fantasy play.
Great work everyone, we look forward to what comes next?
