We have some good news regarding Awards Day. As stated last term, HOTA informed us we were unable to access their venue to run our Awards Day. We are pleased to inform our College community we are able to hold Awards Day here on campus during Week 7.  

Like most things happening in 2020, our Awards Day will be different to those held in previous years. We will host a total of five ceremonies that will occur here on campus. There will be one Prep to Year 6 Awards Ceremony, one Year 7 to 11 Awards Ceremony, and three Year 12 Graduation Ceremonies.  

For the Prep to Year 6 Awards Ceremony and the Year 7 to 11 Awards Ceremony, the attending students will be those receiving an award, and those performing in the band and the choir. All other students will attend their regular classroom. We are able to accommodate one parent/guest per award recipient. Parent/guest attendees will need to book a ticket to present on the day. Due to spacing and COVID19 restrictions, we are unable to accommodate any more than one parent/guest per award recipient. We thank our College families in advance for your understanding surrounding this.

Our Year 12s students will be divided up between three graduation ceremonies. This will allow Year 12s to have two parent/guest attendees per graduating child. The first ceremony will also include presentation of Year 12 Awards. 

Specific details regarding dates and times of the events will be emailed to Year 12 families and all award winners, including Prep to Year 12, next week. 

Our process for signing in visitors to the College has become even easier. All visitors entering The College are now to use their smartphone to register via a QR Code at Reception.  To do this, simply open the camera app on your smartphone and follow the prompts on your phone. 

This week our Year 10 History students travelled back in time on Tamborine Mountain for their local history unit. Students learnt about the vivid early beginnings of both our local indigenous Wangerriburra clan and the later European pioneering families, traces of which have been left all about the mountain. We especially focused on the natural history endeavours of frontier women such as Hilda Geisssman-Curtis & Judith Wright, tracing their footsteps through the forest and observing the very same plant and animal species that they encountered over 100 years ago. We learnt about Queensland's first National Park which is almost on the College's doorstep, Witches Falls, and why it was so special to those that have lived on the mountain in the past. Students will continue to explore other local history topics this term, including the shocking tale of Bernard Oreilly's rescue of the Stinson plane wreck and they are looking forward to creating a presentation on a local or personal history topic at the end of this term.

Students from Year 10 participated in the Scenic Rim Youth Leadership Forum today with Scenic Rim Community Development Officer, Lacey Sawtell and former Olympic Volleyball Player Selina Scoble.  Students worked through what it is to be a leader and what traits that leaders have as well as how they can work towards being an effective leader in the future.  This is a fantastic learning experience for our future leaders and students thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Welcome back to all of our Early Learning Centre families. We have been excited to kick off Term 4 and our first week has not disappointed! The children have arrived back to the service eager to engage in the program and be reunited with their friends. We have had fun exploring what we got up to in the holidays as well as beginning our indoor/outdoor routine.

Now the weather is warming up, we start our day outside before having a welcoming group just after 9am. The children have enjoyed taking ownership over their play space and making choices within their environment. We have already seen some wonderful inquiry-based learning instigated by the children. The children have started to develop an interest in building rockets, designing their own Christmas decorations and role playing teachers and schools. We have also embarked on some intentional teaching to explore the children’s ideas around gratitude. We will continue to extend this as the term progresses. A highlight from the week was when the children tasted a lemon as they leant about the ‘l’ sound… there were lots of interesting faces pulled!

At the end of term 3 we were awarded a Highly Commended for the Scarecrow that we entered into the annual Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival. Some of the teachers, their families and one of our students Dallas came to pick up the award at the ceremony. Thank you to Dallas and his family for joining us. Thank you to all involved for the donations and all the hard work that went into making our Dingle Dangle Scarecrow. We can’t wait for next year and there are already some ideas in the pipeline.

Please spread the word as we have an Open Day planned for Saturday 17th October commencing at 10am. We will have a petting zoo and jumping castle and would love for you to come along and have some fun. We are taking enrolments for 2021 and children can commence the program from 3 years old. Our friendly educators will be here to join in the fun with you and answer any questions you may have. This is a COVID Safe Event and will be operating within the guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

Please remember we have a very short term to finish the year with only 7 weeks left. We will be providing Vacation Care for 2 weeks after this and then the Early Learning Centre will have its Christmas closure of 4 weeks. Watch this space for the new Vacation Care program beginning Monday 30th November. 

During the holidays our lead Senior Band flutist, Cleah Sullivan, participated in the prestigious State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) held at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. From October 1-4, Cleah joined many other advanced secondary musicians from across the region to work intensively on high level music under the leadership of eminent conductor, Brad Ruben. The event culminated with a performance in the beautiful Conservatorium Theatre. "Some highlights were definitely meeting all the awesome players and making new friends, learning great new pieces...that were fun to play but also challenging in the space of time we had," wrote Cleah.  "My favourite was probably one called Celebration and Dance by James Swearingen." Congratulations Cleah!

At this time I would also like to congratulate Yr 6 students Samuel Addison, Dorian Raillard and Ava Byrnes who have been accepted into SHEP Primary, and Lachlan Kalf who has been placed as a Reserve. SHEP Primary will be held at the Queensland Conservatorium from December 5-6. Well done students!

Local Artist and Mountain resident Tamara Armstrong spent the day teaching Year 11 Visual Art students about portrait art and her practice in preparation for Year 12 studies. Students experimented with new painting mediums and surfaces as well as learning about art as a purposeful tool for self expression and communication.

Our Equestrian Interschool team worked extremely hard over the school holidays at the Interschool State Championship they competed in show horse, dressage, showjumping and combined training. This weekend, the 10-11th October, they will compete for Interschool Eventing. The team won the best school stables award, decorating them using fairy lights, TMC banners, ribbons, windmills, bunting and horse information. In the Show Horse category, Ava Byrnes placed 6th overall, and in Dressage, Sienna White placed 7th on Chappy & 9th on BJ. For Show Jumping Talia Criss competed in 90cm placing 12th overall, and Fuschia placed 5th overall. In the 1.20m Show Jumping class Fuschia Criss placed 4th receiving a merit award to the proposed Nationals team for 2020. In Combined Training, the Teams Award will be announced next week at the Eventing States; Sienna White placed 4th receiving a merit to the proposed Nationals team and Cailtin Ward placed 5th in the 80cm Combined Training Class. We're proud of all of our students and wish them the best for Eventing States on the weekend.

Congratulations to Elsa Sandholt and her netball team, the Bull Sharks, for winning the 2020 Queensland 16U Championships! On top of that Elsa finished on an awesome note by being selected into the U17 2021 Queensland Netball Squad.
