2023 Readers Cup

On Tuesday night Ariana Stevenson, Isobel Stevens, J da Silva Macedo, S Petersen and E Saunders competed in the 2023 Readers Cup event that was hosted by St. Stephen's College.

Readers Cup is organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state wide competition for young readers. Teams of four to five students together read a set of books, and then compete with other teams to answer quiz questions from the books. Winners from regional competitions then compete in a state final.

The event challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.

This year our students had the privilege of reading Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief by Katrina Nannestad, Cop and Robber by Tristan Bancks, No Words by Maryam Master, Seven Days by Fleur Ferris, and How to Make a Monster (Prometheus High #1) by Stuart Wilson.

The Readers Cup competition successfully had 747 teams registered from Year 5 - Year 10. From these teams, there were a total of 3688 readers. Remarkably, 15,405 books were read by competing students.

The TMC team achieved a total score of 23.5 from 5 rounds of quiz questions. This reflects 10th Place out of 14 teams, taking the lead on St Hildas, Assisi Catholic College, The Southport School and Trinity Lutheran College. We would like to acknowledge and congratulate the students from All Saints Anglican School (1st place), LORDS - Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School (2nd place), and Saint Stephen's College (3rd place) on their impressive results.

Thank you to Judith Carlyon for inspiring and organising our students to participate in this competition. Your passion for literature and literacy shines through in your work with our students. Also, thank you to the students and parents who were able to attend and support our team. It was a highly enjoyable night and we look forward to attending the Readers Cup again in 2024.

An Article by Year 3

The Year 3 students have been working on persuasive writing during Term 2. Our assessment was to: 'Write a persuasive text convincing Mr Stevens to recognise a significant celebration or commemoration at TMC'.

To practise, we decided to write a persuasive letter to the community, explaining why TMC Open Day is the best. We worked together to create the following text.

TMC Open Day Is The Most Magnificent Celebration Around!

Don’t you agree that pink, teacup piggies and tiny, fluffy goats are adorable? It is vital that you come to Tamborine Mountain College’s Open Day to see these creatures for yourself. Not only does Open Day have gorgeous, baby animals, it also has delectable food and it’s a great way for the Tamborine Mountain community to gather.

First of all, I strongly believe that TMC Open Day is the most exceptional day in the Scenic Rim. The fact is, TMC Open Day has amazingly delicious food and drinks. Our Open Day has terrific cakes, awesome caramel-slices, the warmest, most majestic coffee and super, sweet slushies. Due to the delicious food and beverages, you must agree that TMC Open Day is superb.

Furthermore, it is imperative that you agree that TMC Open Day is definitely delightful for families because the community can come to visit our school and spend some lovely time together. Guests can talk to the lovely, intelligent teachers, students can show off their classy, new classrooms and we can show guests the luscious school grounds. Due to this community engagement, don’t you agree that TMC Open Day is the most magnificent open day in Australia?

Finally, it is vital you agree that TMC Open Day is undoubtedly incredible because of the excellent attractions. We have amazingly awesome animals and we have thrill-seeking rides. There are perfect, pink piggies, chirping, cheerful chickens, exhilarating rock-climbing and a giant, inflatable obstacle course. Due to these amazing activities, it’s definitely the best carnival in the entire state.

To conclude, I am absolutely certain that TMC Open Day is the best school carnival around. There are exciting rides, adorable animals and a cake stall full of delicious treats. It’s also a fantastic way for the local and school community to come together for a social day. Come on down to TMC Open Day. You won’t be disappointed!
