NAPLAN is being held in Weeks 4 & 5 for students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9. Please see the timetable below for a breakdown of when tests tests will be running. Please speak to Mr Stevens if you have any questions about NAPLAN 2022 - headofprimary@tmc.qld.edu.au.

Congratulations to the following students for placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the TMC Cross Country Carnival. Ribbons (5-9 years) and medallions (10-17+ years) will be presented at Monday's assembly.
On Saturday 30th of April, three Year 12 students, Maddy Graham, Joseph Lithwaite and Max Lavanga-Slater, represented the College at the 2022 Rotary Model United Nations Assembly. The TMC team represented the nation of Italy during the event. They discussed, debated and voted on 5 resolutions that focused on international cooperation on health and climate change, the protection of free speech and the press and the ongoing role of peacekeeping. The event gave the students the opportunity to see the way the world works at the UN and some of the hurdles that we as a planet face when dealing with major issues.

As part of the senior science syllabus, students are required to select an experiment to modify and perform that experiment. On Friday, year 12 chemistry students were conducting their modified experiments. Experiments included galvanic cells and single displacement reactions, where students were collecting data to be analysed. Students were required to write their own methodology and conduct their experiments considering safety and ethical issues that may arise. Students will now go on to evaluate their experiments and make recommendations to improve the quality of the data and to minimise errors and write their findings in a scientific report.

This term in French the year 8’s have been learning how to talk about houses. Each class created their own interpretation of a floor plan, working together to decide which rooms should be used for what purpose. I can’t wait to see what other house designs they come up with this term!

Year 10 students were lucky enough to visit the Gold Coast Careers Festival today at Carrara Indoor Stadium.
Students were able to talk to local universities, Tafe Queensland, local employers, the Australian Defence Force and other local Gold Coast Training Organisations. Students really enjoyed the experience and were able to ask questions and start planning their future career paths.
Mrs Peita Parker-Browne
It was a great week for Secondary debating with the TMC Open A team taking on the much vaunted side from Queensland College of Health Science and coming away with a brilliant victory. The topic of the debate was "It is time to pursue 'Planet B'" and our team took the affirmative position. They successfully argued the case that humanity should throw in the towel and give up on Earth and start looking for our next planet. This was the Open A's first victory of the season but we are sure it won't be their last. Well done.
Mr David Haskins
Year 12 Biology students have spent the day at Toohey Forest Environmental Education Centre. The students have conducted fieldwork to collect data on the transition from wet to dry sclerophyll forest. The fieldwork involved plant identification, collecting abiotic data and included some koala spotting! Our Year 12s were fantastic ambassadors for TMC, with TFEEC staff praising the maturity, skill and commitment of our students. These budding biologists have showed excellent analytical and decision-making skills, and caught a glimpse into the life of an Ecologist. Thank you to Toohey Forest Environmental Education Centre teacher Gabe King for facilitating such a rewarding day of practical Biology.

Over the past 2 weeks Year 4 have been taking their learning outside and conducting some nature play on Fridays. We discovered that time spent learning outside and using natural resources supported our creativity and problem solving skills. It also enhanced our cognitive functioning, which improved our academic performance. Studies have also shown that self-discipline and eyesight can be improved by working outdoors, as well as reducing stress!
We learnt about making paint from mud, how to build a statue out of stones, made patterns with sticks and stones along with experimenting with symmetry in nature. The children showed an intrinsic motivation towards these sessions and really enjoyed the creativity, thinking outside of the box and they had some great team building skills taught to them as well.
We are eager to continue this style of learning and look forward to the school's new nature play area opening very soon.
Mr Cameron Hall
We have enjoyed an exciting start to Primary Debating this year!
All ten students selected to represent the school attended our first round of debates. This is a reflection of the commitment of all team members - our round reserves were eager to attend to learn about the process, and support their team mates.
The topic of the debate was "a good book is better than a good movie", and the TMC teams presented sophisticated (and entertaining!) arguments on both sides of the debate. The adjudicators were delighted with the quality of our students' speech content, and speaking style.
Both our Affirmative and Negative teams were victorious!
Congratulations to our Round 1 participants: Isobel Stevens, Ariana Stevenson, Skye Petersen, Ivy Jamison, Aria Ambridge, James Haskins, Jasmine da Silva Macedo and Kai Ayoub. Thank you to our round reserves, Riley Brown and Nicholas Parker who both demonstrated great team spirit and support.
If you would like to see these public speaking superstars in action, come along to our Open Day Showcase Debate on the 14th May, and make your way to the Year 6 classrooms at 10.30am.
With a wonderful start to the competition, we are excited to see how our debating participants 'grow' through the remaining rounds!
Ms Byron and Mrs Horn
Thank you to the P&F for running a hugely successful Mother's Day Stall. We are always keen to grow our P&F, so if you are able to volunteer a little bit of your time, knowledge or resources, you are more than welcome to join!
One of the best gifts any parent can give a child is the love of books and the joy and benefits of independent reading for fun. Children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school.
Our School participates in the Scholastic Book Club. Up to twice a term, catalogues containing a selection of books for all ages, are sent home with children. Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our classrooms.
It is easy to order. The Book Club Loop platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/loop or by using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
It is with much excitement that we can again welcome Primary parents back to our assemblies! From next Monday, our assemblies will be held in the hall starting at 2:10pm. Parents traditionally sit in the back rows of the hall, but space can easily be made on floor level if you find the stairs a bit difficult.
There will of course be some Covid-safety considerations. As visitors, we will not need to check parental vaccination status, but anyone with Covid-19 symptoms will not be able to attend our assemblies while unwell. Thank you for your understanding and compliance with this.
To celebrate all our wonderful special Mum’s and Grandmothers the children invited them to a morning of activities.
Arriving together the children took their Mums around a variety of engaging activities. The Pamper station was a delight for the senses as essential oils were used to create a salt hand rub after a quick wash it was onto a hand massage. The cupcake station was popular with the children decorating a playdough cake! Other activities included icing biscuits, card decorating and paint a portrait of your Mum at the stand up easels.
It was lovely to have the opportunity for our community members to catch up with each other at the centre, thanks for making the occasion so successful everyone.
Mrs Rachael Fernandez
On Tuesday this week, our amazing TMC Cross Country Runners travelled to TSS for the Hinterland District Cross Country. It was a very hot day but all our athletes were in great spirits. We had a total of 21 Students attend the carnival.
A massive congratulations to Madison Cacciola who placed 6th in the 12 Year old Girls 3km and Lachlan Williams who placed 7th in the 17-19 Year old Boys 6km. Both finishing in the top 7 means that they both qualify for Regionals!
Well Done to all students involved, they should be proud of their efforts and how well they represented TMC.
