On Saturday 27th August, TMC was alive with hundreds of students excited to present their Opti-MINDS plays. The participants came from 15 schools across the Brisbane South and Gold Coast regions. We were proud to have 7 teams represent our school.
The day was a wonderful success. When visitors to the school weren't watching their children perform, they enjoyed a festival atmosphere. Our talented teacher aide, Mr Talati, provided entertainment with live music, Mr Holm and Ms Visser cooked sausages all day, and a coffee van kept the mums and dads feeling energised!
Thank you to all volunteers - merchandise sellers, sausage sizzle cooks, live musicians, registration table runners, classroom cleaners, and maintenance staff. Thank you to the teachers and parents who volunteered to judge the performances - you did a wonderful job! To Mrs Melbourne and the TMC administrative team: Thank you for volunteering TMC as a host venue for our special event.
The students of TMC were rewarded for their efforts. Five out of seven teams were awarded First Place, and the remaining two teams achieved Honours! To all TMC participants: We admire your courage, your creativity and your success in seeing the challenge through to the end. You should be proud. Congratulations also to the teams' coaches, Ms Sands, Mr Horn and Mrs Horn.
There are few extra-curricular educational experiences that nurture critical and creative thinking in the way that Opti-MINDS does. Participants inevitably feel empowered as they examine the ways that different societies work, and consider the roles of virtues, values and beliefs in achieving global sustainability. We look forward to the State Final Event, where children from all over Queensland will 'raise their voice' and present an "Ideas Forum", where they present a vision for change, ensuring for a bright future.
If you would like to sponsor our teams in their State Finals participation, please contact Mrs Horn: dhorn@tmc.qld.edu.au. We would appreciate ANY support you can give!

This week drew a close for the Grandparents Drive for Father's Day. The Grandparents Drive was organised by Charlotte F with the help of SRC to provide comforts and presents for the elderly at the local retirement village. Students from the Secondary school donated a variety of presents such as biscuits, chocolates, slippers and teddy bears.
We would like to thank everyone for their generous and thoughtful donations and also would like to wish everyone a Happy Father's Day.

Last Thursday afternoon, Year 3 stayed back at school until 7:30pm for an “Afternoon of fun!”. This afternoon is a lead into what will be the “Year 4 Sleepover” next year, followed by school camps in the upcoming years.
The students had some afternoon tea and played some outdoor games before moving into the classrooms for some craft and team building activities. As we have been reading James and the Giant Peach in class, the students created some peach-related craft. In small groups they were then given some limited resources of strands of dry spaghetti, masking tape and string to build the tallest tower they could that would hold the weight of one marshmallow. This was a fun and challenging task! The groups all worked very well together to create their towers.
After a yummy dinner of fish or chicken and chips ordered from a local restaurant, the students snuggled up for a movie in the classroom of James and the Giant Peach. We had an intermission to venture out onto the oval in the dark to do some star gazing as we have been learning about the moon, the sun and Earth in science this term. We all had a great evening!

On Tuesday selected Junior Band students participated in a Creative Composition Workshop with John Babbage, a professional musician from the well-known Brisbane quintet, Topology. John guided students through the process of composing their own music. Students broke off into groups to compose a short musical idea then performed it for the group. John recorded these musical ideas, played them back to the students and showed them how they could be turned into a composition - the students were delighted!
John will take these ideas away and combine it into a full composition for Topology and our students, and email the sheet music to students to practise. We will then perform it with Topology at the opening of their 7:30pm concert at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre on Friday October 28 - very exciting!

On Wednesday the Prep to Year 3 students participated in the annual Athletics Carnival. Despite low clouds in the morning, we were blessed with sunshine and overall the day was a great success. House spirit was on full display with all accessorising in their house colours and chanting during the Tug of War. It was a close run competition, where every point mattered as it was only 1 point separating 1st and 2nd. In 3rd place, we have Nicholls with a score of 331. In 2nd place was Kyle house with 343 and that leaves our Walton Warriors in 1st place with 344! A massive congratulations to all involved in such a fun morning.
TOTALS
Walton - 344
Kyle - 343
Nicholls - 331

Thursday afternoon was an amazing time in Prep as we celebrated our Dads for Father's Day. We had dozens of Dads visit the Prep children to play games, dance, colour in and draw, do puzzles and check out the classrooms. We even got to enjoy a sausage sizzle and some snacks whilst everyone caught up. The atmosphere was very positive and relaxed. A beautiful way to end the week. A huge thank you to Bodean and her Dad for pretty much organising and running everything.
