Memoranda from Independent Schools QLD - New smoke and vape-free law - school carparks
As of 1 September 2023, smoking and vaping is prohibited in all school carparks.
Section 26VR of the Tobacco and Other Smoking Products Act 1998, prohibits smoking and vaping at state and non-state school facilities and in a 5-metre buffer zone extending from the boundary of the school.
Section 31 of the new law, Tobacco and Other Smoking Products Amendment Act 2023, extends the smoke and vape-free protection to include all carparks provided for school communities. This includes carparks located on council land that are intended for school community use.
Further information is available at New Smoking Reforms.
The 2024 Prep - 12 Fee Schedule is now available on the College website.
Maths is not just a classroom and textbook subject anymore.
Mrs Garnar's Year 7 class took the opportunity to enjoy learning outside with an Angles Treasure Hunt. Twenty Clues were hidden and teams went on the hunt to find them all while answering questions at the same time! Well done Skye and Isobel for winning the challenge but they were all winners as fabulous learning was taking place on a glorious blue sky day on the mountain.

Our Year 10 Certificate II in Sport and Recreation students have embarked on an exciting journey, enriching the lives of our primary students through sports education.
The Year 10s infused each lesson with enthusiasm and knowledge, tailoring activities to suit different grade levels. From teaching Year 2 and 3 students the art of throwing and catching, to guiding Year 4 & 6 students in touch and European handball, and even introducing Grade 5 students to the world of lawn bowls – the experience was a harmonious blend of education and enjoyment.
Beyond honing sporting skills, this initiative nurtured leadership qualities among the Year 10 mentors and instilled confidence in the primary students. The mutual joy and shared accomplishments underscored the true essence of collaborative learning.
The Year 10 class showed their dedication and hard work through their fun and engaging lessons and our primary students brought their enthusiasm and willingness to learn. This intergenerational exchange showcased the profound impact of unity and knowledge-sharing within our school community.
Well done to the Year 10s on successfully passing their coaching assessment for their Certificate II in Sport & Recreation.

Year 9 has been exploring energy conduction and electric circuits in science. Today they used household items to create a circuit and investigate the ways in which energy moves through materials.
The students engaged in an inquiry-based approach and were able to collaborate to design and troubleshoot their circuits to meet increasingly complex criteria. The students showed some excellent "out-of-the-box' thinking and their innovative approach to problem-solving was great to see. Well done Year 9!
Miss Liz Black
A very big congratulations to Meerab from Year 11 on passing a very difficult assessment for her traineeship this week. Meerab is the first trainee from the store who has passed the assessment on her first try and had such in-depth knowledge regarding customer loyalty that she was awarded a Mcdonald's pin for her exceptional responses.
Well done Meerab!

Recently, Year 7 students engaged in a practical component of their Biology curriculum. They ventured to Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area, where they had the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they had recently acquired. The students honed their proficiency in using dichotomous keys, skillfully identifying various mangrove species with precision. Additionally, they delved into the ecological intricacies of the Conservation Area, analysing food webs and investigating the human impact on these delicate ecosystems. Notably, the students were enriched by informative presentations by Sophie from the Queensland Government and Maggi, a dedicated Koala researcher. These talks shed light on koala ecology and the importance of conservation efforts. Through a blend of detective work and fortunate timing, the students were rewarded with the remarkable sight of two Koalas in their natural habitat.

Over the next 2 terms our Year 6 students will take part in the TMC Transition programme, Stairway to Seven, on the Secondary Campus. The students will be involved in a range of activities to help them to prepare for the transition to secondary school, including time management skills, equipment organisation, and managing assessments / homework. They will also have the chance to ask staff and our current Year 7 lots and lots of questions about the transition process.
I am sure this programme will also ease some of the anxiety linked to moving up to Secondary school - a huge step in their journey through life and one that we want them to enjoy.
On Tuesday last week, I met 6 VAL and I had great fun learning student names and finding out about their emotions linked to moving to Secondary school. They had to work as a team in some activities but also had time for quiet reflection about their journey. I met 6 VIC this week and they were just as delightful!
If you have any questions regarding this programme or your child’s transition to Y7, please feel free to contact me - hgarnar@tmc.qld.edu.au

Introduction
Tamborine Mountain College (TMC) is a private school located in the Scenic Rim and it has a mild, Temperate climate. It is encircled by a vast rainforest and it has a plethora of modern, built features. We have an abundance of unique flora and fauna because we are situated in a lush, national park.
TMC’s Geographical Location
TMC is a Prep to Year 12 college situated on top of Tamborine Mountain. It is positioned on a property at 80 Beacon Road. It is close to a tennis club, a bowls club and a supermarket. Because of its location and lack of traffic, TMC families find the daily commute easier than travelling to schools in the city.
The Climate of TMC
TMC has a Temperate climate with a variety of weather, including heat, rain and some cooler weather. At Tamborine Mountain, the Summers are hot, humid and stormy, while the Winters are cool with clear, blue skies. Due to this mild climate zone, it is warmer than going to school in a Polar region.
TMC’s Unique Natural Features
TMC is encircled by a myriad of distinctive, natural features. Our school has a copious amount of red dirt and it is encompassed by a vast national park. We have an extensive rainforest with an abundance of creatures in our backyard. Due to the scenic surroundings, TMC is different from most schools in the city.
The Distinctive Built Features of TMC
There is an abundance of substantial, unique built features at TMC. Our college has state-of-the-art touch screens in our modern, colossal classrooms. We also have safe, child-friendly playgrounds and we have fresh vegetable gardens. As a result of the plethora of enrolments at the Early Learning Centre, there are more students experiencing these built features every year.
The Native Flora and Fauna of TMC
TMC has a plethora of unique flora and fauna. Our school has a pet cat named CC who came with the school when the land was purchased. There is a myriad of kookaburras and a small echidna that hangs around the back of the school. Since we are in a national park, TMC has more flora and fauna than other schools in the region.
Conclusion
Tamborine Mountain College is a private college found at 80 Beacon Road, Tamborine Mountain. We have a copious amount of unique, native flora and fauna, including rainforest, an echidna, kookaburras and even a pet cat. Our college has a plethora of modern, built features, as well as an abundance of native, fast-growing natural features.

The ELC invited Dad's/ Grandads to join us for morning activities before or after eating a yummy bacon and egg muffin over at the Primary Campus.
Bowling, throwing and building using real life carpentry provisions were a big hit for our young children as they spent one:one time with their Dad/ Grandad. Thank you for dropping in and staying for awhile to play.
Happy Fathers Day 2023!

Mia J from year 8 placed 1st for TMC on Kakodas Honour in the 90cm Super two phase class at the Emmaus Interschools showjumping competition last weekend at Jimboomba.
On Wednesday we took over 50 students out to The Kooralbyn International School (TKIS) to compete in our Round 3 of HIA Sport. This round of sports included Netball, Ultimate Frisbee, and Volleyball. TMC showed great sportsmanship on the day and made TMC very proud. Our Frisbee players learned some new tricks against very good opposition. Volleyball was also super competitive but saw us come away with a couple of wins from our seniors. Netball was strong with our Junior Girls remaining undefeated and only having 3 points scored against them the whole day. Overall we tied 2nd place with TKIS and Hills College came away with their first win for the year in the sports exchange. Congratulations to all students involved it was a fantastic day.

On Thursday 15th August, Sophia DF competed for a spot in the Hinterland District 13-14 year old female Futsal team. Demonstrating a high level of skill in attack, an ability to read the game and make crucial decisions that result in goals, Sophia was selected in the 9 player team.
Then on Friday 25th August, Sophia attended the South Coast Regional trials. With great determination to trial in her best form even though she was nursing an ankle injury, Sophia competed in three 25 minute trial matches. Staying composed while selectors were making judgements, Sophia displayed consistently her high level of skills on the court as well as communication skills, leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Before the trials were concluded, the selectors picked a team of possibles vs probables to play one final match. Proudly, Sophia was selected for this match. With one last chance to prove herself, Sophia took her position on the court. As the tension built, Sophia took a tackle to her injured ankle. She decided to continue on, showing resilience and courage. When the match came to an end she waited nervously with her team while the South Coast coach read out the names of the selected players.
Sophia DF has been selected to compete in the South Coast Regional 13-14 year old female Futsal team! She will be competing at the Queensland Representative School Sport 3 day tournament on 22nd - 24th November, 2023 where selectors will be picking the School Sport Australia Futsal team. We are very proud of your achievement Sophia and wish you all the best at the State tournament. Congratulations from TMC.
